Obit for Michael J. Neville

I'm looking for an obit for Michael J. Neville, I don't have an exact death
date for him, but I think it would have been the late 1800's, or early
1900's. He was a Detroit City Firefighter sometime before 1900. His
wife's name was Mary Neville (nee. McElheron) and had at least one child,
and probably more, Loretta Isabel Neville

Your assistance with this is greatly appreciated.

James:

She is on the 1900 Wayne Co MI census page 237 Print and page 8272 writing.
Indicates Mary born Aug 1869 Canada and daughter Loretta was 10 year old.
She is a widow therefore Michael date of death is narrowed somewhat. Look at
this site for a possible Death Certificate from the City of Detroit.
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/howto/w2w/michigan.htm

Suggest you see if the Detroit Fire Dept has a history of the department.
Perhaps Michael died in the line of duty and would be mentioned in such a
history.

Good hunting!

I guess the problem with the State of Michigan death cert is that for that
$26.00, they only do a three year search. Which means that if you think
someone died in 1890, for example, they will search 1889, 1890, and 1891.
If you're wrong, you're just hooped for the $26.00. So instead of taking
pot shots at it, I'll try to get his employment records from Detroit Fire
Department first. Hopefully that will cut down the range I need to search
or pinpoint it exactly.

J: Isn't Michigan indexed 1867 thru 1897? That should cut your search
years down if Fire Department doesn't help.

Thanks! It does have a Michael Neville listed whose death occurred in 1884.
But that can't be right. My Great Grandmother, Loretta Isabel Neville was
born in 1889. Plus it says he died in Osceola, Michigan, which is quite a
pitch up the glove from Detroit. I wonder if it would be safe to assume
that since he doesn't show up in the 1867 - 1897 index, that he must have
died 1898, 1899, or before the census in 1900? It's not that I'm cheap,
mind you, but my wife is... :)

After reading this, I checked with ancestry.com, and they've got a
listing for Michael J. Neville in the 1890 city directory for Detroit.
He was a ladderman with Hook and Ladder Co. Number 1, given address was
100 7th, but I'm not sure if that was his home address or work address.

The database at Ancestry covers the directory for 1890 and 1891, and his
information is from the 1890 record. I didn't find Mary Neville in the
1891 directory.

Hope that helps,
Cathy

Actually, that does help! That was probably his home address. They didn't
commonly list wives in the directories in those days, men, single women,
widows, etc.. Thanks for the info!

Actually, it is more helpful to read the database's introductory page,
which says that its effective range extends only to 1884 and indicates
that it received its last update in 2001:

http://www.mdch.state.mi.us/gendisx/index.htm

Coverage seems to be incomplete even for the early years. I have a
Sinclair family in Eaton County that experienced above-average
fecundity *and* child mortality during those years. A search for that
surname and county yields one result:

Sinclair, John, 15 May 1881

But I know of three other children of the same couple whose deaths I
have been able to document from the county's own records:

Hobson Sinclair, 12 May 1879
Minnie Sinclair, 14 May 1879
Lois Sinclair, 19 May 1879 [all from diphtheria]

The database also omits the morbidly-spectacular suicidal drowning of
another of my ancestors in 1880 -- in a different county. Although I
have gotten pointers from there once or twice, I generally find it more
efficient to read over the records of my counties of interest.

I did finally hear back from the Fire Department concerning Michael Neville.
They only have two pages from his record, which are both injury reports.
They're mailing them to me. The person I talked to on the phone said that
many of the old records were damaged or lost, ironically enough, in a fire
in the 1930's. Oh well, maybe there will be some useful information in the
injury reports.
