NYC ca 1775

WAS there a city directory for NYC/Manhattan for the 1775 +/- 2 years
time period?

Does anyone have quick access to it if there was? I need to know where
a place called Peacock Tavern was located. Probably in the Wall St
area, but that's bald guesswork.

I didn't find anything on the GenWeb site.

This is going to sound odd, but there's a husband/wife writing team who
have a series of books set in New York, and the books cover a wide range
of years, including the years you're looking at. They've done a lot of
research on buildings from those time periods and might know the place
you're looking for.

They've got a website, and you can contact one or both of them through it:
http://www.meyersmysteries.com/home.html

Hope that helps (and even if it doesn't, the books are well worth reading),

Most likely it was located at Peacock Alley (Waldorf-Astoria Hotel) ...

As far as I know, the New York City directories date from 1786. You may

find the tavern that you're looking for in one of the early directories.

Interesting. I checked a map or two though and the Waldorf is waaaaaay
far north of Wall Street which I'm told was the city limits of NYC in
the 1770s. Thanks!

The city limits of NYC were well North of Wall Street before the 1770s. You

Thanks! Certainly contradicts everything I heard last week in NYC, but
still -- the Waldorf is up at Central Park (which I cannot identify on
the 1767 map) and the cemetery is a few blocks from the Battery. It
seems to be too far away.

No Central Park in the 18th century - it was designed by the Olmsteads.

To clarify, I was only responding to the incorrect information about Wall
Street. I agree with you that Peacock Alley is too far north to be correct.
A possible problem with finding a building location in 1775 is that a third
of the city burned down in the Great Fire of 1776.
