1870s School Uniform?

Legg inn av Chris Shearer Cooper » 07 aug 2006 04:26:11

Sorry for the flood of posts, but I'm excited. It seems very likely I've
stumbled onto pictures of my great-grandmother - and we have never had
pictures of her before!

Can anyone shed light on this outfit? Is it a school uniform or something?

http://www.sc3.net/Picture.png

Thanks!
Chris

Considering the rather intricate collar, buttons, sleeve detailing and
bracelet on her arm I doubt it is a school uniform.

Any way to get an idea of when this picture was taken, based on the
detailing?

Thanks!
Chris

I'm not sure that there's enough of the picture; usually, you
take clues from the clothes, and there aren't many of them there.

My first impression is that it's a costume of some kind; don't
know why, might be because I work in theatre. I think it's the
way the clothes fit; they seem very loose (at least if it's the
19th century) and the drape in the background. It's not like most
studio shots I've seen.

Hairstyle is usually a good indicator, but again we're defeated
by the casual nature of the shot; her hair is quite unkempt.

Compare to these dated pictures:
http://www.shootingstarhistory.com/hairstyles.html

The photo strikes me as being early 20th century rather than mid
19th century; the posture is very relaxed and full of emotion -
something that you couldn't get with the long exposure times
required for photos prior to the 1890s. Add to that the loose
and unkempt hair, and the fairly low and loose cut of her blouse,
and I think this picture probably dates to somtime between 1900
and WW1. Again, no solid clues, just an overall impression. This
looks vaguely like other family photos in that period, and
doesn't resemble any photos I have of earlier periods.

Others with more background in photo id will doubtless be of more
help; what little I know comes from designing period scenery and
props.

I don't think this picture is from before 1900 - it looks
sorta like 1920's . The sleeves are rather stylish and
sorta looks like something my mother wore around that time.
Usually school uniforms are rather plain - something like a
jumper with a blouse underneath unless this is a gym strip
with bloomers.

In any case this young woman looks like she is ready to take
on the world - and have a good time doing it! Full of
confidence and charm.

take care
Liz

Da(r)n.

I was really hoping this would turn out to be my great-grandmother who died
in 1916 at the age of 65 ...

Chris, I have a lot of old photographs of family, and I doubt very much
your picture is from the 1870's. The style of the photograph is too
casual, as is her hair and dress - and what she is wearing is not an
1870s outfit, for either woman or child. My strong belief is that this
is a picture somewhere in the 1915 neighbourhood.

Just to give you an idea of what I mean, go to this page

the picture with the three ladies from 1915, and see if their outfits
don't ring a bell.

What do you think about this picture ...

Any thoughts on the dress or hat she's wearing?

Thanks!

I agree - no earlier than 1910, and probably closer to 1918.
