1917 Prescription for Glycaloid ??
I think I have a prescription written for my great-grandmother a month
before she died ... for "Glycaloid". google has never heard of it, any
suggestions where I can find someone familiar with medicines from the 1910s?
Thanks!

Strange ... when I load that PDF file, I can't find the word "glycaloid" in
it anywhere ...

Wait! I see it now. You searched for "glycoloid", the prescription was for
"glycaloid". I have no idea if the pharmacist just mis-spelled it and those
are really the same thing, and I'm not sure what that German paper is
saying!
Thanks,
Chris

Re: 1917 Prescription for Glycaloid ??
I had some trouble finding either word in an older
dictionary. It could have something to do with glycerine or
glycol.
Maybe someone here who reads German can help out with the
link.

Did anyone try Alta Vista's Babelfish? It'll give you a rough idea of
what it says...

Re: 1917 Prescription for Glycaloid ??
What did she die of if you don't mind me asking? That may help.
Just at a guess at the word, I would ASSUME the medication had glycolic
acid. Which was used "in the old days" for destroying cancerous or
precancerous skin lesions in controlled applications.
Today, weaker forms are used for dermatology peels and the removal of
tattoos.

Yeah ... I'm getting the impression that "glycoloid" is an adjective,
describing a property of various substances - so probably not the same as
"glycaloid".

Although the "oid"-ending could be a hint into this direction, this
seems not to be the case here. 'Glycoloid' is the first of those 8 free
keywords, whereof six designate substances and the remaining (TDI) is a
common abbreviation for one of them (Toluylendiisocyanat). The summary
(cf. p.8, "Kurzfassung") of the refered article talks about seven(!)
substances which are reclassified regarding their estimated carcinogenic
potential. Therefore I assume 'Glycoloid' to designate a substance as
well.
