Address ends with "Mt. Auburn A2473Y" - why?

I just came into possession of a book that belonged to a
great-something-aunt, probably around 1910. The "return to" address she
wrote in it gives her address in Cincinatti ...

246 Gilmore St.
Mt. Auburn
A2473Y

It appears that "Mt. Auburn" is the name for that area of Cincinatti, but
does anyone know what the "A2473Y" might be? Some sort of early zip code?
A phone number?

Thanks!
Chris

Hmmm Cincinatti uses
410 Cincinnati Southeast
450 Cincinnati West
451 Cincinnati East
452 Cincinnati Main
459 Cincinnati IRS
470 Cincinnati West

PEnnsylvania 6-5000 is 7 numbers. Your Mt Auburn has 6 numbers
if the first and last letter are converted to numbers. However
Direct Distance Dialing might have worked to bypass the operator.

2 = ABC
3 = DEF
4 = GHI
5 = JKL
6 = MNO
7 = P(Q)RS
8 = TUV
9 = WXY(Z)

Aha ! The Direct Distance Dialing wikipedia article above states
that some cities had 6 or 7 digit telephone numbers before 1951.
So your answer that it is not a zip code. Here is the quote from
the article....

"Many other cities could not yet be included as they did not yet have
the necessary switching equipment to automatically handle incoming calls
on their long distance circuits. Other cities still had either a mixture
of local number lengths or were all still six-digit numbers; Montreal
and Toronto, Canada, for example, had a mix of six- and seven-digit
numbers from 1951 to 1957, and did not have DDD until 1958. "
