New forum for African genealogy and family history

I have just started a new discussion forum for African genealogy and
family history on Yahoo Groups.

If you would like to find out more about the group and how you can join,
please visit the Group web page at:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/afgen/

If you are a member of the South Africa list at Rootsweb (SOUTHAFRICA-
L@rootsweb.com) you may wonder what the difference is, and whether or why
you should join.

Obviously there will be some overlap, because South Africa is part of
Africa, and so South African genealogy will be on topic on both forums.

The main difference is that the African group is wider, and is a place for
discussing genealogy and family history in any country of Africa from the
Cape to Cairo.

The African genealogy group also has web features that some may find
useful --
for example a Calendar. Members of family history and genealogy societies

can enter information about forthcoming events in the calendar, and any
member of the group can see them.

Otherwise, if your genealogical interests are confined entirely to South
Africa, there might not be any reason for you to join the African group at
all. But you may still be interested in joining for the different
perspective.

The African Genealogy forum is defined geographically, not ethnically.
It's not intended for people researching African American Genealogy (there
are other forums for that). And discussion of the genealogy of any ethnic
group whose members are now residing, or have resided, on the African
continent is on-topic, as is the interaction between family history and
general history, or social, economic, political or religious history.

So have a look at

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/afgen/

and see if you would like to join.

Note: this forum was started because of the demise of the newsgroup
soc.genealogy.african on Usenet, and its associated mailing list on
Rootsweb. The formet group died more than four years ago, and in spite of
many appeals from different people, has never been reinstated. I, for one,
got tired of waiting.
