Genealogy in Hertfordshire - Improvements to the site in 200

This site has now grown to include about 2000 pages of information (and
about 3500 pictures) describing the towns and villages of Hertfordshire and
the
county's former inhabitants, together with reviews of a large number of
books about the county.

To make things easier for visitors an improved menu system is being
introduced and currently is available for the "Towns and Villages" and the
"Answer Index" to the responses to the "Ask Chris" facility. It also makes
it easier to read the current newsletter, and to browse through earlier
newsletters.

Also being introduced is a tutorial for beginners. This starts with the
discovery of an old family bible, originally purchased by John Lewin, of
Abbey Mills,
St Albans, in about 1790. The tutorial follows the family back over 200
years (and eventually possibly more) from 1900. Each stage of the search
looks at what
is known, what needs to be found out, and the sources available. It
describes how the search was carried out, including pictures of original
source documents. The first session is virtually complete and concentrates
on the period 1837-1901, with examples from the 1851-1901 census and birth
marriage and death certificates, using up-to-date online resources. Later
sessions scheduled for implementation in 2006 will look at earlier periods,
and a wide range of sources, some online - some on microfilm, and some in
the Records Offices. It is hoped to include parish and non-conformist
registers, wills, trade directories, poll books, land tax, militia lists,
other papers from the parish chest, old estate papers, maps, etc.

It should be noted that the site is free. However if you find it useful -
and especially if I provide personal help through the "Ask Chris" facility -
it is suggested that you might make a donation to the Mental Health charity,
Mind.
