During the Free for All week (until noon on December 7th) we are limiting
searches to specific time bands, rather than the full date range, in order
to deliver the best possible performance to our many users.

Which has very issue of The Scotsman from 1817 - 1950. Log on to

Has anyone managed to get this to work? Search finds articles, even for
this far south, but when I click on "Show full Page" or "Open Article",
I just get "The page cannot be displayed" after a long wait with the IE
loading bar creeping very slowly across but never more than 1/4 way.
Yes, I do have broadband, and I've tried at several times of day.
Further, when I mouse over the results screen text and pictures go
flying everywhere. Another site using the Olive software engine works
OK, though -- the British Library demo at

This isn't going to help you, I guess, but I spent most of the weekend
checking stuff for my 1-place study (and getting distracted by all sorts of
other things). I had no trouble at all, no matter what time of day I used
it. I'm using IE with XP. I know that others have also had no problems.
Time's getting short, but it might be worth contacting them and asking about
your settings - it could be something to do with your security settings, for
example.

I am on dial up and I have harvested tonnes of images concerning this part
of Ardchattan parish for perusal in time to come the past couple of evenings
Will do another stint tonight

once I have a search I have simply right clicked on open article and open in
new window all the way down the page
Wait a while as they all opened and look at each - save or close
Occasionally I had to refresh a window

Its been wonderful -- I just wish I had more time to give it

Thanks everyone for the encouragement to keep trying. I got it working
on an older machine (NT4, IE 5). On first clicking "Open article", I
got a popup which doesn't happen on XP, IE 6 -- a form to "purchase"
the free sub -- so I guess it's something to do with that being
blocked, but I can't see how to unblock it. Looks like I have a long
night ahead...

You do need to make an account and log in - but they don't ask for money or
card details or anything, just an email address and password. I've actually
had an account with them since they started putting archives on line, and
I've never had any spam as a result. - they don't misuse the email addresses
of their registered accounts.

Yes, I got that far easily, it's just that my shiny new fast XP machine
won't let me view anything, so I'm back to the old, slow NT one and
regretting that I didn't discover any of this until yesterday. Do they
do it every St Andrew's Day?

Anyway, I really called in to warn anyone who's saving images by right
click and Save As, that long articles are split into several image
files, of which the first is just the heading, so make sure you have
all the article.

Maybe there's another way to save things to disk, but I can't find it
-- Save Page as HTML seems to hang and do other nasty things like
deleting files, so I suspect they're trying to prevent us doing that.
I'm probably going to use the convert to text option and save that,
hoping to be able to correct the OCR errors later.

Open the pdf version after opening the article, then save that.

I'd tried that, but I never did manage to get this old machine to open
PDFs in IE. (You know the old adage about builders never repairing
their own houses ... well, I'm a computer professional :-) Anyway, I've
remembered that right click and Save As xxx.pdf works (which is why I
never fixed the problem), so now let battle commence.

Anyone who's lost half their images and doesn't find out until tomorrow
afternoon may be able to recover them from their web cache.
