News of relatives after hurricane Katrina

Legg inn av Steve Hayes » 08 sep 2005 08:21:03

I've got several cousins who were living in and around New Orleans at the time
hurricane Katrina struck, and I was wondering how to go about getting news of
them, to see if they're OK.

They are not particularly close cousins. I've not met them, and know about
them mainly from regular correspondence with their aunt, Mrs Monica Louise
Deragowski, who died some years ago. So I haven't pushed too hard to contact
them directly, because they probably have more things on their minds than
contacting distant relatives.

But I did contact a cousin who is much closer to them, a first cousin of the
ones I want to know about, who lives in Maryland, and he too had no news and
is anxious for some, and asked me to pass on any news I did get. Another
cousin on that side of the family was killed by a tsunami some 40 years ago,
and the New Orleans ones knew all about that.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how one could go about finding if they are
OK? I know it's not usually considered OK to post information about living
people in newsgroups, but perhaps this might be an occasion where some
identifying information could be useful, in case a friend or neighbour
reconises them, and can give some news. The main family name is GROWDEN.

There's a newsgroup alt.missing-adults, and I thought it would be foll of
appeals and infomation after the hurricane, but there's virtually nothing on
it.

Steve,

You might try the site that NBC has set up for this purpose.
http://callhome.textamerica.com/

However, I did a search, and found no Growden listings.

Good luck.

There is also a newsgroup called neworleans.general. Perhaps someone there
can advise you. I know that one acquaintance from another newsgroup I
frequent was found through someone on that group.

Steve -- try http://www.nola.com -- it's the website for the local newspaper
and it has a HUGE "guestbook" of this sort of thing.

That said, what part of town where they in? We can go private and I'll
share what I know.

Take a look at the Yahoo "Katrina People Finder". A search for Growden
doesn't turn up anything _from_ them, but apparently a niece of a Joel
and Jane Growden of Mandeville is seeking them, if that's a branch
familiar to you. There's also a link to allow you to enter others to
watch for into the American Red Cross Katrina database if you choose to
do so.

What a mess. My parents home is under 8 feet right now and other Doskey
relatives have similar difficulties - but for now, at least, I haven't
learned of any losing their lives. Which is more than I can say for many
unfortunate people.

A humbling and tragic experience for my birthplace and its inhabitants.

Thanks to all who made suggestions, and to Joe Pessaro who looked up current
addresses.

I'm glad to report that I heard from two of my cousins there today. They had
just got electricity back today. All the members of their family were safe,
but one had suffered damage to several trees, only one of which hit the house.
Another had suffered flooding. Some took refuge in Miami, others in Houston.

And one said:

"I refuse to complain about our situation when so many friends have lost
everything."

And having made contact with that branch of the family for the first time in
about 15 years, I'll be able to update the family tree with new marriages and
births, so it's an ill wind that blows nobody any good.

I hope others who have been waiting to hear from family in the affected area
had as (relatively) good news.
