SSDI - Death Index - date SSN issued - search link gone
Hi,
The link I used to use to get the date an SSN was issued is gone (it
was http://www.informus.com/ssnlkup.html). This worked whether the SSN
was "expired" or not.
I found a couple of other places that return only the state of issue
(they are SSN verifiers, not death indexes)
Anyone know of a free site where I can lookup the year an SSN was
issued?
I tried 3 different SSDI search pages, but none of them give this
information (I didn't try ancestry.com, as that's a pay site). The
formal description of the Death Index says it has a field for date of
issue, and I found a sample Death Index report (pay site) that gives
this information. So I'm looking for an SSDI search page that includes
this information.
Thanks

I misread your request. Personally I have never come across a place that
states when the number was issued and I wonder if one does exist. Also, the
only reason I can think of wanting this information is to verify if a
person(immigrant) was in the U.S. at a certain time period. I was born in
the U.S. and received a SSN when I was 14 but I can see no relevance to this
in genealogy if someone were to look for me in the future.
Any thoughts?

Ancestry doesn't note in the SSDI the actual date an SSN was issued, either. I
don't recall ever seeing a site-- pay or not-- that had that feature, but then I
guess I never knew about the one you referenced.

It is more accurate to say "Ancestry costs UP TO $200". I don't spend near
that much on it in a year, because I don't have everything. You don't have
to take the full package: pick what you need.
I doubt that you'll find a free one that has all the detail you want.
A request to SSA for the record costs $27 each record. Add it up, and the
cost of subscribing to a service doesn't seem so dear.

That's one I tried. It doesn't give the year the SSN was issued.
Ancestry doesn't note in the SSDI the actual date an SSN was
issued, either. I don't recall ever seeing a site-- pay or not--
that had that feature, but then I guess I never knew about the one
you referenced.
Most I've seen have been issued "Before 1951". I can't recall
seeing a more recent date, but then I haven't been looking at
recent deaths, either.
I just did a quick run through at ancestry.com, putting in names of
people that I knew were born after 1951 and have died and it does
show the year that they received their SSN (in one case it was 1971,
in the other, it was 1976). Put in someone who I knew obtained their
card earlier and got the (before 1951) date.

Okay, so there is an SSDI that includes this data from the Death
Index. (Again, I was previously using a free link from Informus that
included all SSN's, not just the 'expired' ones.) After reading that I
again searched for other (free) SSDI indexes that include this, and I
didn't find any. Ancestry costs around $200, and I had a free (14
day) account several months ago (I didn't find anything I hadn't
already found elsewhere). Ancestry's pretty steep considering I want
to check 4 SSNs. I could do that through a private company for $15
each (which I won't - it will have to wait for another day - when
hopefully I'll have better luck).
It is more accurate to say "Ancestry costs UP TO $200". I don't spend near
that much on it in a year, because I don't have everything. You don't have
to take the full package: pick what you need.
If anyone knows of another SSDI index that includes the 'year SSN
issued' field from the Death Index, please post it here, or e-mail
emily_g107 @ hotmail.com
I doubt that you'll find a free one that has all the detail you want.
A request to SSA for the record costs $27 each record. Add it up, and the
cost of subscribing to a service doesn't seem so dear.

I understand that it is possible to have access to Ancestry for free
in the
Family History Centers.
Also, your friendly Public Library probably subscribes to Ancestry
through the Gale Group. Check it out.
