First I want to thank everyone who sent me information and help solve this mystery, Secondly this shows that inf on the census can be wrong. In regard to the 1880 census showing three daughters for Erastus and Elizabeth Carson. Actually only , Martha and Charlotte are daughters, Kittie is a son whose name was Kit Eugene Carson and he fathered thirteen children, one of them Earl is my father. This is one census error. there are at least three errors the 1910 census. The are the birthplace of Tessie, age of children and their relationship to the head of the house, Jesse Cornell. These are step-grandchildren.
In regard to these crum grandchildren. It appears that Charlotte married William crumm sometime before the birth of Tessie May in Mainesburg, Tioga County, PA. Her birth is recorded in Tioga County as Tessie M. Crumm, born March 30,
1897 in Mainesburg, PA. Father is William W. Crumm, mother is Charlotte May Crumm, . Dewella is not recorded there. In 1900 they are living in Troy. Bradford County. In 1920 Charlotte is remarried and Dorothy is living with her in Cortland county.
I did not find Charlotte on the 1910 census. I know there is a Charlotte Thornton listed in Addison in Steuben county but this is not her. I have found no further trace of Tessie or Dewella Crum/Crumm/Crumb. I know nothing about William. I do not have a death date for any on these. Thank you again Marilyn Carson Bess

In 1910 if you check Tioga Co., there is a William Crum but he is indexed
William CRUNN. It indicates that this is his second marriage and the second
marriage of his wife as well. Her name is Jennie age 32 born in PA, father
born in Scotland, mother born in PA. They have one child living with them,
Mildred, age 11.
This could possibly be your William although, how they would have an 11 year
old daughter is bit puzzling since Charlotte was still alive in 1910. Maybe
the child is from Jennie's first marriage and she is just listed as a Crum
in error.
Anyway, I just thought you might want to check this guy out a bit yourself.

P.S. I'll keep checking to see if I can find Tessie or Dewella.

Judging from what I found on one website for that particular area of NY
and PA, Crumm by any spelling is a somewhat popular name, and people by
that name have been there since the 1700s. It's very possible that
Tessie's father William was not the only William Crumm in that area at
the same time. The 1910 census is definitely going to hold some more
answers, at least with regard as to a time frame of when William died.
My thought is that he died at some point shortly prior to the census,
and Charlotte is either remarried or off looking for work to support her
family, and this is why the girls are with their grandparents.
My own grandfather is lost somewhere in the 1910 census. He's in the
1900 census, then he gets married later in 1900 and the next time I find
him is the 1920 census, when he's already married to my grandmother and
their first child has been born. I have no idea when his wife
died/divorced, or where he was in 1910 -- all I have are family stories.
As for your grandfather Kit, I can understand how an enumerator,
especially one who might be in a hurry, could hear Kit and think Kitty,
ignoring all the rest, such as him being a male. I'm not sure how the
enumerators were paid, but if it was on how many people they could cover
during a set period of time, then I can easily see them rushing and
filling in blanks later, thinking that they'll remember things, or that
if person A in the family was born in PA, then obviously persons B,C, &
D were born there, too.
I'll still be on the look-out for William and/or Charlotte in the 1910
census. One or both of them have to be somewhere.
Take care,
Cathy

Gotta love those enumerators. My grandmother's name was Frances, and I
never knew her by anything else . . . until I learned she was listed on
the census as Frankie, a male. She used Frankie on her marriage license
and other censuses as well, but by 1920, when she was a widow, she was
again listed as Frances.

Just a correction to my previous post, I meant to say that Charlotte was
still alive in the 1900 census not the 1910. So if William had remarried
this Jennie, then the daughter Mildred was perhaps Jennie's daughter from
her first marriage and therefore not a Crumm. Sorry for the confusion.
Still haven't found anything else on Dewella or Tessis.
