Crum grandchildren in the household of Jessie and Elizabeth

Legg inn av Marilyn Bess » 30 mai 2005 17:00:02

Instead of missing persons, I have people that I can not identify in what I thought was a well documented period in my Carson family. I began my research on my families when I was young. In facts I started gathering names while in High School. My grand parents, parents, aunts and uncles all answered my questions and told me about cousins, family reunions and the likes. However, I was stunned and perplexed when I found three unknown children,Tessie 14, Deuella 10 and Dorothy 6 Crum, listed as grandchildren on the 1910 Van Etten Chemung County in the household of my great-grandmother and her second husband Jesse Cornell. I can not find any of these Crum children either in 1900 or 1920. Hiram D and James C Carson two of her sons by her first marriage to Erastus Carson. Jesse Cornell who was also a brother of my other great grandmother has one son by his first marriage, had one son by his first marriage. Elizabeth has eight children by her first marriage , six sons and tow!
daughters. The older daughter Martha married a Fitzpatrick. The younger one was Charlotte and she married a Thornton and lives in Cortland County in 1920. However, I can not find her in 1900 or 1910. I can not find these Crum chidlren in anyother census. Any help or suggestion would be greatlyn appreciated. Thank You Marilyn Bess

Apaprently, Charlotte is their mother:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~srgp/birth/tcbc09.htm

This is for Tioga County, PA, which is right across the border from
Chemung, and it shows a birth record for Tessie M. Crumm, born March 30,
1897 in Mainesburg, PA. Father is William W. Crumm, mother is Charlotte
May Crumm, . They were living in Mainesburg at the time of Tessie's birth.

I know that the 1910 census shows Tessie as being born in NY, but I
don't always believe what's on the census records as far as place of
birth, names or ages are concerned.

I've tried to look for William and Charlotte in the 1900 census for both
PA and NY, but so far have not had any luck with finding them. Do you
have a date of birth for Charlotte?

Hope that helps,

Cathy

William, Charlotte, Tessie and Dewella are here in 1900:

Home in 1900: Troy, Bradford, Pennsylvania
Image source: Year: 1900; Census Place: Troy, Bradford,
Pennsylvania; Roll: T623 1383; Page: 8A; Enumeration District: 45.

If you look at the 1920 census, Dorothy is living with Lottie and Edward
Thornton. The enumerator had lined out the last name area, assuming it was
Thornton, and then added in Crum (or Crumb).

There are times when I hate ancestry! <grin>. There was something
recently that a bunch of us were looking up, and at first I didn't find
the person(s) and then the next day they turned up. And now with this,
family, I was looking statewide in PA for the family and couldn't find
them. Did you find them by using ancestry or a different program? What
name were they indexed under? I tried Crumm as exact and soundex, and
Crum as exact and soundex (and with their various first names), and with
no luck. It makes me wonder if the ancestry database has burps from
time to time...

Yeah, I found them on Ancestry. If I remember right, I was looking in PA and
NY under Crum* and birthdate +/- 2 years, trying variations of the first
name Charlotte/Lottie, (I didn't expect Sharlott) and having no luck. Then I
started trying first names only. I think I finally hit paydirt on
Dewella/Deuella. I do like that Ancestry gives you the chance to try all
those variations, but it can be a pain at times. :-)

Doubt if this will help but as I was doing my obituary thing today I
ran across this entry:

Charles E. Crum Jr., 86
SALT SPRINGS - Charles E. Crum Jr., 86, a retired truck driver, died
Wednesday, May 25, 2005, in Lake George.

A native of Fort Wayne, Ind., he moved here 25 years ago.

Mr. Crum was a U.S. Army veteran who served in World War II.

Survivors include, daughters, Kathleen DeWeese, Ocala, Charleen
Godfrey, Lansing, Mich., and Tammy Dailey, Columbia City, Ind.; son,
David Crum, Indiana; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Forest Lawn Funeral Home, Ocala, provided information.

And strickly based on the last name I am sending it out.

After seeing what you found, I went back to ancestry, tried a search on
Crum as soundex for PA, looked through pages of hits -- no Tessie, no
William, no Deuella. Don't remember if there was a Sharlott, because I
was looking for Charlotte <grin>. Went in and added the county name and
bam, there was William. I've reached the point lately where if I'm
looking for someone, I keep trying over the course of a few days,
because either I 1) think of a new variation, or 2) find that the same
search criteria turns up new information on the next day.

I do like being able to search on the various variations (a big
improvement over the way genealogy.com has you search), but the times
when ancestry isn't acting right do tend to frustrate me.

I noticed, and this made me grin, that while Sharlott's information
showed her being born in New York and her parents, the information for
Tessie and Deuella showed that both of their parents were born in PA.

Thanks,

Cathy
