I'm almost sixty years old now, adopted at birth and know absolutely
nothing about my biological family. Where do I begin to find out who I am?
Thanks

Re: Family history
I only know I was born in Dallas, Texas on July 24th, 1945 at Florence
Nightingale hospital. Adopted by Richard Cleveland Bristow and Valrie
Inez Bristow and named Duane Neil Bristow. My adoptive mother burned
all paperwork pertaining to the adoption. I recently ordered a new
birth certificate from Dallas. There was no helpful information on it.
I noticed it was filed August 8th, 1946.
File # 074399-1945.
Thanks
Duane

Duane,
Begin by collecting everything you can about your birth. The date of
course
and where you were born. If you were adopted there should be
paperwork. Were you adopted through an agency, state office or other?
Possibly what may be most important is the laws in whatever state you
were born, relinquished and adopted in. They vary widely. There are a
plethera of professional searchers out there who might be able to
assist you once you have some info. Good luck.

Which authorities supervised your adoption? They should surely have kept a
duplicate set of papers.

you might be able to query the hospital records for the date of your

Does Florence Nightingale Hospital still exist (in some form)? If so,
you might be able to query the hospital records for the date of your
birth. If nothing else, get a list of all of the women admitted to the
maternity ward in the prior few days and start from there.

Duane,
Go to Yahoo groups and join Adoption Latte or Angels Blessing Search and
Support. They have lots of FREE searchers who have experience in various
states and will be able to get you started and probably be able to give you
names to start with and quite possbily locate your birth family for you.
Here are the links:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/AdoptionLatte/
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Angels-Bl ... h-Support/
My husband was adopted and these seem to be two of the most active and
successful groups that I've come across. Good luck! I'll probably see you
in the groups if you join.
