Hello everyone. My name is Max Macalister here in Melbourne,AustraliaI`m
brand new to this, but here goes.
I am seeking information on a couple of ancestors of mine.
1.Dr Alexander Macalister,who went to Georgetown,Demerara in 1815.Married a
Catherine Mewburn in 1818 there. Her fathar was Thomas Mewburn,a member of
the Scottish Assembly. Her mother`s maiden name was Johanna DeBerg or
DeBrugh.Evidently her family had sugar plantations there.I think the
Macalister family of what was left of 8children returned to Glasgow mid
1830`s,and a further 3 children were born there in 1838,1839,1840.Sometime
in the late 1840`s,the family then came out to Sydney,Australia, and
Dr.Alexander was on the medical list for 1858,1859,and disappeared off the
list in 1860.He didn`t die in Australia, and I haven`t been able to confirm
that he died in Scotland.nor when or what date.
2.Thomas Mewburn, the father of Catherine Mewburn.I know bugger all about
him, except that he was a member of the Scottish Assembly, and that he may
have originally came from Dunbartonshire, near Glasgow,so I am hopeing that
somebody out there may have some information. Cheers for now. My E/M is

The first thing would be to look for him on the 1841 and 1861 censuses for
Scotland. From Oz, the easiest thing to do would be to find your nearest LDS
and ask them to get the films for you. They will eventually be appearing on
line, but not in the immediate future. You can look for his death
certificate on line at Scotland's People http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
.. Once you have an idea of his age and birth parish (from the census), you
can also look for his baptism in the registers of the Church of Scotland,
also at SP.

2.Thomas Mewburn, the father of Catherine Mewburn.I know bugger all about

I have a few more problems with this line. First, what do you mean "Scottish

Assembly"? The Parliament was suspended in 1707 and didn't reconvene until
1998, It seems possible that what is meant is the General Assembly of the
Church of Scotland, in which case you have a good chance that he was a
Minister (which doesn't fit too well with the sugar plantatins, but
Ministers were actively sought to go out to the colonies to serve the scots
working there..
HOWEVER, this family name does not occur in Black's Surnames of Scotland,
nor does it return any hits in a search of the IGI for Scotland. The closest
in Scotland is Mabon, which occurs on both sides of the Border and has a
wide range of alternative spellings. It is very common in scottish family
history to have to deal with a range of spellings in a family - our
ancestors had a fine disregard for such things - one would say it, a cerk
would write down what they heard, and another layer of confusion appeared in
the records. I have one baptismal entry where the family name is pelled
differently every time it is mentioned 3 times). The only place where I can
find the exact spelling Mewburn is Yorkshire. If you can find her in
Scotland in either census, that may shed a little more light - and maybe her
death cert will show up at SP.
good luck,
Lesley Robertson
