Copying pictures

Legg inn av Colin Bearfield » 22 mai 2005 23:00:35

Hi

I'm in Manchester, UK. I know an old couple in Connecticut and they
are worried about some photos that they want to safeguard. They are in
two folders. I'll call them "gravestones" and "chapel". They were
stored by the programme "Family Tree Maker" which is, I believe, a
popular genealogy database.

I don't understand why he thinks they are inaccessible, but could
someone tell me the steps to go through to save these picture to
another folder, or maybe to "export" them. His mother went off to
Oklahoma in a covered wagon a century ago and he's very worried that
he might lose pictures of the headstones.

Over the 4000 miles I am guiding him through making an image of his
entire system but that might be overkill.

It might be possible to use Windows file search utility. In Windows 2000:
Start, Search, Files or Folders,

enter the filenames to search for; e.g., *.jpg, *.bmp, *.gif, *.tif, *.tiff,
*.jpeg, *.jpe

Make sure that 'Look In" says Local Harddrive

If it finds file names that they recognise, copy the files to a suitable
backup device.

Why not get them to form a report or chart containing the pictures, right
click on the picture, left click Copy picture, open photo editing software,
create new, paste picture, save to another location.

Kind regards,

I have FTM version 10. I've not done a lot with photos - just insert a few
into FTM's "scrapbooks"....

It's possible these "gravestones" and "chapel" folders are ordinary Windows
folders? Tried running a search?

In the version I have photos are stored in "scrapbooks" which are pages of
images associated with individuals or marriages in the database. I can't
immediatly see a way to create a free standing scrapbook file/folder with
the title "gravestones". It looks like everything imported into FTM is
stored in a .FTM database file. So you could run a Windows search and find
the .FTM file and back that up to CD.

However note that when importing images into FTM thay can be optionally
compressed or the resolution reduced so finding the original might be
better. If you open a scrapbook and right click on an image and select
"edit" It puts up a warning that says...

"Your picture will be much better quality if you get the original befote
editing it. Would you like to get the original now?"

If you select YES an "Insert picture" window will open with an Explorer like
viewer into the folder where the original was imported from. There is a
"look in box" which should help eg in my case it currently says "My
Pictures" because thats where I imported a picture from. There is also a
"Find file" button which might be helpful if the original image has been
moved since it was imported. However it appears to be little better than
windows "Find files or folders" and you need to re-enter the name of the
image you are looking.

Thanks everybody. I should have been clearer in my request. I have

20 odd years of experience in computing - I just don't know anything
about FTM. I can use some of the stuff I've been offered but I was
hoping that there would have been an "export" feature to which I might
have directed this old couple. I can't "see" their folder tree so I
don't know what they've got, except that they have only one hard
drive.

It sounds as though their pictures should be readily available through
the usual sources anyway.

They've never seen Windows Explorer so they probably are not aware
that the pictures are easily available.

If anybody has any brain waves please et me know, in the meantime I'll
try to talk them through a search and copy manoeuvre.

Now that I look I see the FTM database is stored in a .FTW file not a .FTM
file. Not that this helps any, just that I was wrong earlier.

FTM does have some export capability but not for photos that I can see. The
best I could find is a way to copy them out of a scrapbook one at a time
then paste them into something else. Not really suitable.

FTW/FTM or FBC/FBK

Family Tree Maker
Family Tree Maker is needed to convert FTW/FTM and FBC/FBK file formats to
GEDCOM files.

FTW = Family Tree Maker for Windows
FTM = Family Tree Maker for DOS
FBK = Family Tree Maker Backup for Windows
FBC = Family Tree Maker Backup for DOS

From a file. The source doesn't matter. From what I have seen, FTM makes
another copy of the file, compresses it and puts it in the FTM data file.

Maybe I missed something, but do they have the original photo(s) or access to
the image file(s) that were copied into FTM? Perhaps I am wrong in assuming
they copied the photos to FTM themselves.

I just don't know yet. The time difference between the UK and the US

means that there is a 24 hour delay between Q & A. I should have
thought about all these questions myself and got answers before I
asked for advice.

What has struck me is that I expect that FTM will have a backup
facility, won't it? If it has then we might get it onto one CD (they
don't have a DVD burner). Then they would only have to install the FTM
programme in any new machine that they might buy and they'd have what
they've got now.

As a first step I am arranging for them to make an image of their
entire system, but the resulting file will be about 4GB by my
calculation. They would only get a file that size out of their
computer by spanning it on to around half a dozen CD's. I'm not sure
how good they are at that sort of thing. The husband is in his 80's.

Thanks for the help so far.

Yes two ways...

1) File -> Copy/export Family file -> explorer window opens on default
location -> then navigate to where you want the copy -> etc

2) File -> Backup file -> put mark by "custom directory" -> Click "change
file or directory" button -> explorer window open on default location
C:\FTW -> navigate to where you want to save a copy -> Change the file name
if you want -> press OK.

You can do all of the above by just copying the .FTW file using Explorer.

You will probably only be able to save directly to a CD from FTM if you have
packet writing S/W.

My reason for asking was if they still have the original CD, file,
whatever the pictures were posted FROM, I'd refer them to that to make
their backup. But then they'd have to _find_ the original file if it's a
file on their hard drive.
