My Documents locks up
As I stated in a previous message, I create genealogy documents with
WordPerfect 9 which are saved to My Documents.
When I attempt to access these files at My Documents they often freeze or
lock up and the only way I can get out of My Documents is to shut down my
computer. Sometimes this happens as I am scrolling down the document, but
it also occurs when I click onto the document.
Usually this happens when I go to the document to cut and paste something to
a message, but when the lockup occurs and I have to cut off my computer I
lose my message.
Am not a complete novice, but also not a geek. Is My Documents part of
Microsoft and if so, where can I go for technical support? Have searched at
Google, but can find no solution.
Have uninstalled and reinstalled WordPerfect twice, but did not help. Does
not occur every time, but enough to be extremely annoying.
Have Windows XP and the problem has manifest in both Internet Explorer and
MozillaFirefox.
If no one has an answer, can someone suggest a site where I may find an
answer.

Hi Ralph - I don't have an easy solution to your WP problem, but NEVER EVER turn
your computer off like that if it can at all be avoided. You could do serious
damage to your filesystem that way and wind up losing all your files. If
necessary, wait a reasonably lengthy period of time for processes to complete
and then, if nothing has happened, press ctl-alt-delete. Select the Task
Manager in the window that comes up and look for your Wordperfect in the list.
You can then do an End Process on it. That isn't the greatest way either, but
it's better than turning your computer off.
Now go into My Computer, right-click on your hard drive and select Properties.
Then click Tools and then Check Now under Error-checking. That check is to see
if you have done previous damage by turning it off.
My Documets is a sort of default, but you can store your files anywhere you want
to. It's likely just that coincidence that causes you to see My Documents. If
they were stored elsewhere, then you'd probably be seeing that.
You say that both of those hang on you also? Just by themselves or along with
having Wordperfect running? What else do you have besides XP? an anti-virus?
Norton-Symantec?
No easy answer to that unless someone else has seen it already and knows what it
is. Otherwise it needs to be narrowed down. If it was just Wordperfect then you
could go to their site. Just keep on Googling for discussions & solutions.
Here's something to look at:

See if that looks familiar. Try turning Norton off and see oif you have trouble
then (assuming you have Norton).

"My Documents" is just a folder with some special treatment. Read more at:
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/win_xp_mydocs.htm . You can always use Windows
Explorer to create a new folder "Genealogy" on your C: drive and move files
from "My Documents". Does ctrl-alt-del bring up Windows Task Manager ? You
should be able to kill WordPerfect 9 from the Task Manager.
WordPerfect 9 is a program that runs independent of any browser, so try
running WP 9 with no other programs running and no internet connection. You
could have documents that are too large or corrupted, or you are low on RAM
memory, or a virus, trojan or spyware interfering. If you can't figure out
what is wrong ask a computer savvy friend for help.

First thing to try is empty your cache: In Internet Explorer click on Tools,
Internet Options, Delete Files, Delete all offline content, OK.
I know it doesn't sound related, but IE is so closely tied to Windows that
this often fixes problems.
The usual caveats about a full virus scan and spyware scan always apply.
Other things to consider would include:
How many files _do_ you have in My Documents?
How are you browsing, as Icons or Details?
The support site is:
http://support.microsoft.com
You can search the knowledge base for your issue.
The newsgroups at news.microsoft.com are free and there should be an
appropriate XP group for your question there.

There have been known issues with Word Perfect. Have you checked for
patches and updates at Corel? There are quite a few downloads available at:
http://www.corel.com/servlet/Satellite? ... dPerfect+9
you may need to copy and paste the URL if it line wraps. Worth a try.
