Here's his obituary:

Rocky Mountain News (CO) - December 22, 1995
Deceased Name: FRANK FISCHER, DEVELOPED FOODS FOR HEINZ
Funeral services were held Thursday for Francis "Frank" Fischer, a chef who
ran the experimental kitchen for H.J. Heinz Corp. and was involved in the
development of the K-ration.

Mr. Fischer, who was 92, died Dec. 16 in Boulder.

Mr. Fischer worked for 38 years for H.J. Heinz, where he oversaw development
of products as head of the experimental kitchen. His son, Wayne Fischer of
Boulder, said his father was involved with the development of the K-ration,
which was the staple food supply for thousands of soldiers during World War
II.

The K-ration consisted of a boxed package of a canned meat or cheese,
crackers, a powdered beverage and a sweet. More than 233 million boxes were
produced between 1942-45.

Born Oct. 26, 1903, in Sem-pack, Switzerland, Mr. Fischer came to the United
States in 1922 with little money in his pocket, his son said. He married
Helen Brodac on June 23, 1934, in Pittsburgh.

He became a chef and was hired by Heinz, where he worked his way up in the
company. He retired in 1968, and moved to Boulder in 1987, his son said.

Mr. Fischer is survived by his son, Wayne of Boulder, two brothers, Jules
Fischer of Petaluma, Calif., and Tony Fischer of Penngrove, Calif., and two
grandsons. He was preceded in death by his wife, three sisters and two
brothers.

Services were held at Howe Mortuary Chapel, and interment was in Green
Mountain Cemetery in Boulder.

Contributions can be made to the Nature Conservancy, 1815 N. Lynn St.,
Arlington, Va., 22209.

It's a database called "America's Obituaries and Death Notices." I have
access to it through my local libray's website.

My thanks also to you for posting that. Upon checking, I see that my own public
library carries that and I've already saved some obit files for my grandmother's
branch.

That's obvious? Without the obit. saying that this was also her first
marriage, all one can properly conclude is that was her surname at the time.
It may very well be her maiden surname, but that is in no way confirmed.

.... you're right!

I will try to find the relevant dates for Helen (which is not easy, becaus I
know really little about her).
