1860 and 1880

On the 1860 Census on Heritage Quest, I find a Bart. age 21, Julia age 60 and a
Margaret Kenefick. 1860 > MAINE > CUMBERLAND > 1-WD PORTLAND Series: M653
Roll: 436 Page: 805. I cannot tell the age of Margaret on line 12?

On the 1880 Census on Mormon site, I found a Bart., wife Margaret Kenefick and
children in Benicia, Solano, California, USA. They have a daughter Julia (and a
few others). Do you think these are the same family. Did mom and dad name a
daughter after grandma? Any ideas? On this 1880 census Margaret is about 33
years. On the 1860 this would make her about 13! Perhaps but a little
young??? With names I am searching this is way out of the "normal".

Michael,

First of all, it looks like the Margaret of 1860 might have the age of 29
written on the census. If you'll look down the page, you'll see another of
the stylized 9 written. Odd, but I've seen it before. Ancestry has it
transcribed as 23, which it well could be. I don't think it's 28, because
the stroke pattern is different than with other 8s.

Some additions to your 1860 and 1880 censuses:

In 1870 a Julia Kenefit appears in the San Francisco census as head of
household. Living with her are Michael 30, Patrick 28, Bartholomew 25, and
Margaret 27. Their relationship is unstated. These were all born in
Ireland. They are living in the dwelling of another family, and that family
could have provided the incorrect ages.

In 1900 Margaret Kenefick appears in San Francisco, age 53, with children
Richard 26, Jewel A. 21, Mary R. 19, and John 17 Bartholomew is absent, and
Margaret is shown as a widow having born 6 children, 5 living.

In 1910 a Margerete Kenefick (age 65) is found again in San Francisco.
She is portrayed as age 65, a widow having been married 25 years; she has
been 6 children, 4 living. In the household are daughter Mary 27, son John
25, niece Katarine Colman 23, and niece Margarite Colman 19.

It goes on: a John A. Kenefick of the right age to be Margaret's son is
in San Francisco in the 1920 census, living with wife Helena and several
stepchildren. The census shows both of his parents to have been born in
Ireland.

I will send you any of these images that fit what you are looking for.

You're dealing with 2 different Margaret Keneficks. The older one is
probably Bartholomew's sister. The other one is his wife. In the 1900
census, Margaret, the widow of Bartholomew, says she came to the US in 1868.

It looks like Margaret, wife of Bartholomew, was a Mullane or Mullins before
her marriage. Here are what I believe to be the death records for 2 of her
children found on Rootsweb:

Last Name First Name Middle Birth Date Mother Maiden Father Last Sex Birth
Place Death Place Residence Death Date
KENEFICK MARY R 01/31/1881 MULLINS F CALIFORNIA SAN FRANCISCO(90)
09/29/1962
KENEFICK RICHARD 08/05/1876 MULLANE KENEFICK M CALIFORNIA SAN
DIEGO(37) 04/19/1945
