Ancestry.com - New Enhanced Image Viewer

Legg inn av Gjest » 30 apr 2005 13:50:30

I occasionally get a "Stack overflow at line 0" error in MSIE 6.0 (Win XP)
while using the new Enhanced Image Viewer for census images at ancestry.com. I
click OK and continue ... it doesn't seem to cause any side effects.

Is anyone also having this problem?

I don't know about your issue but I find the basic viewer is faster and just
as clear so I don't use the enhanced one anymore. If anyone knows any
perks to using the enhanced one maybe I'll try it again but as far as I can
see there is no advantage. Anybody know of advantages to the enhanced
viewer?

Something seems to have changed in the last week with the basic viewer,
which I had been using for several weeks (via Firefox).

Suddenly last week, the images seemed to be 'sectionalized'. By that, I
mean that the initial display consists of a grid that is 'filled' in, one
block at a time. No problem viewing the image, but when I do the 'right
click', 'Save Image As', etc.; I get a save of the 'block' that the cursor
was in vs. the entire image. I've played with it in various ways including
using IE but always just get the 'block'. This applies to both Census images
and Newspaper images.

Switching to the Advanced Viewer using IE solves that problem but the
quality seems to be less (at least my OCR software has more trouble).

Is the enhanced one the one that takes away a perfectly good B&W image
and replaces it with a fuzzy color image with bright green or hot pink
ghosts?

I don't get the pink and green that you are talking about on either one.

I'm not getting the sectionalized problem but it sounds like you found the
quality of images is better with the enhanced viewer. Does that mean larger
files when downloaded, too? If I find a direct ancestor I usually enlarge
to 200% first to do my "save as". That way I do get a larger file.

I meant to say that the quality under the Enhanced viewer is NOT as good as
under the basic.
I too was enlarging to 200% under the Basic Viewer and getting very good
images.

Under the Enhanced viewer, the magnification doesn't seem to matter - i.e.
the same file gets saved, regardless.

The sectionalized problem with the Basic Viewer began sometime last week. I
initially thought it was the particular image I was working with at the time
but went back to another that I had just saved and the same thing happened.

Was the image loading very slowly at the time? I just tried it again and it
is working well now. However, in the past, I did rememeber the time I got a
partial image. Only thing I could think of was that the image had not
completely downloaded at the time. I went back in and tried it again and it
saved just fine. Some days the images almost seem to get "stuck"
downloading. Do you think that could've happened for you?

I noticed this too. So I went to the Save button and found that that had
changed too - you can download the entire image from there as before.
But it has to download properly, and gives you the full resolution
image.

I've a Macintosh, so can't use a viewer, so this is the html version.

It all seems to be there on the screen. After the banners and buttons
appear, a 'grid' appears with small 'image' icons in each box. The boxes
fill in with the real image and I end up with a nice looking screen of what
I want. When I right click in the page, a drop-down menu comes up.

Before: I'd click on Save Image As: and have the opportunity to save as
(Census as .gif; newspapers as .png) and it would. Ancestry's Save button
simply gave instructions on how to save the image.

Now: Same process but what gets saved is 450X450 (the contents of one of
the boxes) vs. 6100X7090 (the entire page). I'm speaking of a newspaper
image here. Also Ancestry's Save button now reloads the page in a new
window along with giving print&save instructions for the new image.
Unfortunately, my memory is barely able to handle 1 but with 2 I'm
effectively dead.

Dunno what the issue is -- at the FHC we're getting those ghosts on
every machine we've got, whether they're 486s, 98s, WIN2K, or XP.
Sometimes one of the machines will have a nice magenta ghost instead of
the pink or an electric blue instead of a lime green, but B&W it's not.

I use it, it doesnt change the color, doesnt make the image fuzzy, only
clearer and allows you to move around the image and focus closeups which
you cannnot do with the old view or within MS viewer.
