Sligo, Ireland around 1800

Legg inn av Pb » 28 apr 2005 20:45:27

Hi. I am re-posting this as I am still struggling to join the dots and am
hoping that new readers may be able to help; I am after information
regarding an ancestor in Sligo, Ireland around 1800.

I am trying to get information on the Gilvey family who have lived in
Durham, England since around the 1850's; John Gilvey (my great-great-great
grandfather) was born in Sligo, Ireland in 1821 and a search through
Rootsweb gives the following "Gilvey" in the Sligo tithe records:

Parish : Kilmacteige Townland : Annagh Lot : 3 Name
: Gilvey, Daniel

However, the 1824 tithe records list a Daniel Kilawee (but not Gilvey) and
the site also mentioned that Kilawee is an accepted alternative name for
Gilvey. In addition, Daniel was, and still is, is a popular forename for
Gilvey in England.

So ...

1. Could Daniel Kilawee also be Daniel Gilvey? As the surnames are listed
year on year, would this be an official name change or more likely a
corruption of some sort?

2. Is there any way to show that Daniel Kilawee/Gilvey and John Gilvey were
related?

3. I don't suppose there is any way to determine why the name change from
Kilawee to Gilvey would occur?

4. Anyone with any experience researching in this part of the world and at
this time period able to offer advice? I live in the UK so, unless I am
lucky enough to get across to Sligo, mayhave reached the end of the line.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Have you tried the UK+ Ireland newsgroup? You might get some help there.

Hi Lyn, thanks for the reply. I have posted to soc.genealogy.britain but
can't find soc.genealogy.ireland - does it still exist?

Have you tried the Leitrim-Roscommon website? They have some info
about Sligo in the "1901 Census". If you post there, maybe someone
could help. You can find it at http://www.leitrim-roscommon.com
The website is mostly Leitrim and Roscommon info but they seem to be
expanding to Galway, Mayo and Sligo.

Thanks Jeanne, I have had a brief look but there appears to be little for
Sligo, as you suspected. I have added it to my resources and will keep
checking back.

Best regards,
Paul
