looking up neighbors on the census images

Legg inn av nutty » 27 apr 2005 21:37:59

Hi,

I know I have seen this answer before but, wouldn't you know, I can't find
it now. How can I look up the names of the neighbors on Ancestry's census
images? Someone had given a tip on how to do that in any given area. For
instance, I can see some of the names on one image but the others are too
faded out. I am hoping there is a place that will show me what the
transcribers took the names to be.
TIA,
Nutty

I do not know the "answer" to which you refer, but you could compare
neighbors' names for your family (or person of interest) from census to
census. For example, let's say you have difficulty reading the
neighbors on the 1920 census, try the 1900, the 1910, and the 1930 censuses.

Otherwise if you are viewing Ancestry with the write-overs (as I call
them) which are hard to read at times, you could contact/visit a public
library or the NARA or LDS library to view a different copy of the census.

If you have Adobe Photoshop or another program, perhaps you could copy
an paste the image into it and do a "reverse image" or whatever it is
called, to get a negative image that may be easier to read. You could
tweak the brightness/contrast, etc.

Thanks for the suggestions but there is something you can click on ... or
there was something you could click on before the new image viewer ... that
will show you the names of the neighbors. I have tried the other
suggestions but am having no luck.
Thanks,

Was it neighbors, or was it if you keyed the name of the Head of

Household, it lists the other family members for that census at that
same address?

I believe the LDS 1880 census search index has a link for viewing "neighbors".
I can only assume you're looking for something that will list the HOH's
neighbors before looking at the actual census page. Otherwise, if you ARE
looking at the census page, you're also looking at all the neighbors, too.

Nutty,

I just put in a search for Clyde Hummel in California. When the results
come up, click on that name and it will have a line that says 'family and
neighbors' view results. Click on that and it will show the neighbors. Not
sure what other years that work.

I am looking in 1930 census for Clyde Hummel in California but don't see

anything about neighbors. Maybe it is right in front of me, but I just
don't see it.

It's hiding, right under the 'Home in 1930' line. :-)

It took me a few moments to 'see' it. :-)

Lani,
Choose 1930 Census. Type in Clyde Hummel, California, SEARCH.
A list will come up with the results. Click on the first or second name (my
grandfather and father). When the next window opens, it shows personal
iinformation for Clyde Hummel. It shows: Name, Age, Estimated birth year,
birthplace, relation to hoh, race, home in 1930 FAMILY AND NEIGHBORS:
View Results-New. Click on that, and it will show a list of family and
nieghbors.

The family and neighbors capability only shows up in 1930, 1910 and 1870.
In 1860 it shows the household for each listing.
