I am looking for information on Charles Rehberger born Virginia in 1864.
Specifically something that shows who his parents were.

The only Charles Rehberger I can find who is that age was born in New
York. The 1870 census lists the family as:

Rehberger, Valentine, 44, M, baker, Hesse
" Dora, 43, F, , "
" Wm, 14, m NY
" Chas., 5, M "

I can't find any Rehbergers in Virginia.

OK, so you "know" that: HOW do you know that?

You see, couple of years ago I "knew" that my great-grandad came over from
Ireland. The whole family knew that. It just wasn't true; turns out he was
at least a fourth generation American from Pennsylvania whose father was a
decorated Civil War veteran.

I'm not saying you're wrong, but one thing I've learned is that you can
only claim to "know" what you've actually documented. So if you have SOME
documentation indicating Virginia, let us know everything you have. You
also have to let us know what you have done, instead of telling us after we
spend time duplicating work you've all ready done.

There's a Charles C. Rehberger the right age living in Baltimore, MD.
Depending on the census you look at he was born in either MD or VA between
1864 and 1871. In the 1880 census he's living with his parents, Henry and
Ella Rehberger, in Baltimore.

The 1900 and 1920 Baltimore Maryland census where he says he and his
children where born in Virginia.

OK, so you "know" that: HOW do you know that?

Different Charles. The Charles I am looking for was born in Va in 1864, that
Charles was born in MD in 1871.

Not conclusive. I have several ancestors whose place of birth was
recorded erroneously on the census. For 40 years one ancestor was listed
correctly, then suddenly his origin changed from "Ireland" to "NY".
Another ancestor changed from "Pennsylvania" to "Indiana". Census can
give you a place to look, but can be wrong.

I agree wholeheartedly. After 27 years of Genealogy research, Ive come to
EXPECT Census to be wrong except in certain cases. I think this is one of
those cases. The reason I think that is that Charles Rehberger and family
were literate. I would think he would know where he and his children were
born.

Ages and birthplaces on census listings are wrong a surprising number of
times. This is the Charles C. who in 1900 says he was born in MD in 1864 and
his parents were born in VA.. In 1910 he says he was born in 1871 in MD and
his parents were born in Germany. In 1920 he says he was born in 1872 in VA
and his parents were born in VA. The wife's name is Ida 1900 through 1920,
so it's the same Charles.

Da__it. I made a mistake posting. I am not looking for the parents of
Charles Rehberger, I already know who they are. Henry and Ella. I am
looking for the parents of HENRY Rehberger.

Jeff

Man I must be getting old. Thanks to Doug

Legg inn av Jeff » 27 apr 2005 18:18:06

OK, Thanks Doug. I somehow got completely off track. I now know that Charles
parents are Henry and Ella and tat Henry's father is W Rehberger (Germany)
per 1850 Census.
