Need to pick your (collective) brains

Legg inn av Althiom » 24 apr 2005 02:35:10

I have been able to trace an ancestor back to 1797 Maine and have run
up against a stumbling block. Doing a little research I have found
out that Maine came into existance around 1795/1796. Now I am
starting to get lost in history and/or geography. Basically, I am at
a loss on how to continue. What should I do next???

Here's the info on my oh so distant ancester

NAME: William Carville
Born: about 1797 (was arrived at by subtracting his age on a
US CENSUS.
WIFE: Polly Last Name Unknown
Born: about 1798 (was derived by subtracting her age on a
US CENSUS)
CHILDREN: David W(?) Carville
Born: about 1830 (derived by the same method
mentioned above)
Unreadable Carville
Born: about 1832
and so on an so on (sorry my have hurts from
typing)

PLEASE Don't do the work for me just point me in the right direction.

Thanks in advance.

Maine was a part of Massachusetts before that. Check the MA records...

I am reasonably sure that Maine existed prior to 1795 (although I cannot
recall when it became a bona fide state) as did some level of record
keeping. My first inquiry would be to the state historical society to find
out what records may have been kept and by whom. You might also ask them
where such records might now be archived.

Good luck.

I encourage anyone who has a question about any of the states, historical ones
in particular, to use the USGenWeb Project and states webpage at:
http://usgenweb.org/states/index.shtml The Maine site is at:
http://www.rootsweb.com/~megenweb/ and begins with a history.

Maine became it's own state in 1820. Prior to that it was part of
Massachusetts. It was the 23rd state admitted to the union. Maine's
Northern border was not finalized until 1842.

Search for and contact a local (town/city) historical society and also
a county historical society.

Well, it's not really work ... Google is your friend:

Search: "William Carville" Maine

Get:

ilies/ffiles.txt>

Read [excerpt]:

The trick is to use all the different combinations and
permutations of the info you have, and as you get more just build
on that. Once you have names and places, it makes the search
easier but it does not guarantee success.

The next place to look is on the GenForums

<http://genforum.genealogy.com/carville/>

Unfortunately there is a dearth of info here except for a line of
Henry Carville who's son William may be your William's father...
or not.

New England research is all about the town records. They recorded the vital
records for the inhabitants of the town from the beginning. Especially in
Massachusetts and Maine which was formed from Massachusetts. You need to
find the town records for Lewiston, ME. Your Carville family apparently
lived there for several generations. Edwin, his father David, and David's
father, William, who you're looking for were born there. According to the
Ancestral File on the LDS site http://www.familysearch.org William was born
there in 1795. It gives his parents which you'll want to verify by looking
at the Lewiston town records. They've been published in book form so check a
local library. You might also be able to borrow them on microfilm from Salt
Lake City through your local Family History Center.
