I know that my great-grandfather was born in and immigrated from
Ludwigsburg, Germany, in June 1875 and that he was born in 1860.
What is my next step for finding his parents?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Some help please re German research
Anna,
Was he from Ludwigsburg? The church records from there are filmed (both
Catholic and Protestant) and you can rent them at local Family History
Centers. Have you checked the IGI for his name? If not, try putting it
through a search at http://www.familysearch.org. There are smaller towns in the
O.A. of Ludwigsburg so he may have been from one of those rather than
Ludwigsburg proper. Many of those are microfilmed, too.
If he was 15 when he came here, he might have come with his parents. Have
you tried the 1880 census to see if you can locate him (hopefully he was
still at home)? You might also try to find his marriage record here.
Sometimes the parents' names are there. When and where did he die? You may
be able to find his parents' names on the death certificate (although that
is considered a secondary source for their names and is only as accurate as
the person giving the information--hopefully they were correct).

Re: Some help please re German research
Was he Catholic? If so, your best bet would be to check the church records
from Ludwigsburg.

Re: Some help please re German research
Thanks for your help. It looks like my next step is the Family History
Center. I had looked at some of the microfilm once when I was in SLC
but found out that I was looking for the "wrong" name (old german Amann
doesn't look like today's English Amann) so I guess I need to start
over. I assume he was Lutheran since that's what the family was in the
US.
