How to trace someone that did not live with parents

Legg inn av Phillip Murphy » 18 apr 2005 19:25:36

I am trying to trace back to someone's parents, but unfortunately she
did not live with her parents at the time of the 1900 census.

I have found her in the 1900 census, living with an uncle and aunt.

Here is what I have so far.

Mary (Mayme) Witte, born in Missouri in May 1886. Her parents were both
born in Indiana. She lived with an uncle and aunt, John and Margarita
Lange in Dubois County, Indiana in 1900. (All from 1900 census).

She married Edward J. Gehlhausen on 10/20/1908 in Ferdinand, IN. She
died on 5/10/1917 in Huntingburg, IN (Found connected to her husband's
information).

Unfortunately, the 1890 census was mostly lost and will do me no good.

Anyway, I have run out of ideas of figuring out who her parents were.
Any suggestions on where to go now?

Thanks,

Phillip

Since you have the dates of her marriage and death, you can write to
Dubois County for copies of her marriage certificate and her death
certificate. One or both documents should include the names of her
parents. For the marriage license, you'll need to write to the Dubois
Circuit Court Clerk's office. For the death certificate, you'll need to
write to the Dubois County Health Department.

You should be able to find the addresses and contact information for
both of these departments on the Dubois County GenWeb site:
http://www.ingenweb.net/dubois/index.htm

And also at this site:

Good luck,

Cathy

You may have gone this route already, but I would assume that it was
Margarita who was the Witte and she may have been living in 1880. Therefore,
use the online LDS 1880 census transcription to look her up.

I see a large Witte family in Indiana with a Margaret, age 9, who could be a
candidate.

Thanks,

Phillip

You didn't indicate what her age was in 1900, but maybe this will get you
one more step.

Marriage certificates do not always have parents names listed. However,
if they do not, checking the names of the witnesses may give a clue.

I've found that sometimes its easier to order the film for the marriage
license from the FHC (and less expensive, only $3.50 for the roll)
rather than write to the courthouse.

First, I would request a copy of her death certificate. That should have
her parents' info as long the informant knew their names of course.

Second, Um...OK, this may be just a coincidence but I looked at the 1900
census image for Mary Witte listed with her aunt and uncle, John and
Margarethe (that's the German spelling what it looks like on the census)
Lange, as you posted. Margarethe's parents were both born in Germnay. On
the line directly above the Lange family, is a Frank and Annie Witte (ages
26 and 20) both born in IN with Frank's parents born in Germany.

I think that Frank and Margarethe were younger siblings to Mary's father.
So I checked the 1880 census for a Frank and Margaret (or other variation)
Witte. I found both Frank and Margaret living in Dubois Co., IN with
parents Henry age 56 and Wilhelmina age 43. Henry was born in Oldenburg and
Wilhelmina in Hannover, Germany. The following children are listed: Lizzie
age 20, Henry age 17, Mary age 15, Bernhard age 12, Margaret age 9, Herman
age 8, Frank age 6, Clarence age 4, William age 2.

If my theory is correct, then Henry and Wilhelmina could be Mary's
grandparents. The only thing that doesn't match up is that all of the
children up to and including Margaret were born in OH according to the 1880
census so that doesn't match the 1900 census data.. The son Henry is old
enough to be Mary's father but he was born in OH.

Anyway, it's just a theory. Do you know of any siblings for Mary that might
confirm or disprove this theory? I'd be happy to dig further into this for
you. I like a challenge. ;-)

Happy hunting!

I'm not sure how useful this will be but here's the story of my
Grandmother as far as I can piece it together:

Born London UK 1864 apparently to William Richards and Wife Eliza.

Birth Registered 1864 as Sarah Ann Everard by William Everard and his
wife Christian (William Richards' sister).

in the 1871 and 1881 Census' she was shown as Sarah Ann Everard living
with William & Christian.

She married James Quinton in 1884 giving her single name as Richards and
father as William Richards Shoemaker

Before 1884 I can find no record of a Sarah Ann Richards born the right
year in this area.

1885 Sarah & James had a daughter they named Sarah Ann Eliza

1886 Baby dies age 9 months

1891 James & sarah Ann have in their household Christian Everard (Yes
the one who raised her and Eldest surviving daughter also Christian (not
an overly common girls name)

From here on Sarah Ann always appears as formerly Richards.
Also from 1884 on there are no further records of Sarah Ann Everard

It was very difficult to locate her and identify the links but if I
could do over 100 years after the facts anything is possible.

Oh My Mother born to Sarah and James in 1904 said her mother always told
her she was abducted as a child by Welsh Gypsies and raised by them. She
celebrated 2 birthdays: one the gypsies gave her and her 'real'
birthday. Where THAT story came from I may never know!.

At least she was one real character in the family. She had 9 children 6
of whom lived into their 80's 1 lived to her 60's and 2 died as children.
