1890/1900 lookup please?
I have the following possible relative - if anyone has access to the
1890/1900 census I would very much appreciate a lookup to see where he is
living and with whom.
George Hopkins CATER born 9 April 1882 State unknown. In 1880 the man I
believe was his father (also George Hopkins CATER) was living alone in
Michigan (which may or may not be relevant!)
the WW1 draft info I have is
WW1 Draft:
Cater, George Hopkins
Birth Date: 9 Apr 1882 Ethnicity: W
Birth Place: relative lives Dover OK City/County: Humboldt
State: NV

There is a George H in Cook Co., IL. b. Sept 1877 IL. Father b. England,
mother b. NY. He's rooming with the Dunlap family and occ. life saving
service.
For living in MI, there are:
Geo R. age 46 b. canada
George age 25 b. NY
None living or born in OK or NV.
Any other clues to narrow down the George's?

Thank you for taking the trouble to look him up.
I have only the WW1 draft information about the son. The father George
Hopkins CATER was born in England 1854. He was in England in 1871 and 1901
but not the two intervening censuses - I have found him in Michigan in 1880
listed as a steam engineer. I have no details of the mother at all. In
1901 George the father was back in England and he got married that year
stating that he was unmarried.
The George H you mention in IL is a possible, the age is a bit off but I
know that happens.
Again thank you for your efforts

I suspect that these are the parents of the George H. in Cook Co, IL. George
H. later lived out west. In 1920 he was in Costa Mesa, CA. His mother Louise
was living in his household.

It looks to me like the George Cater who was in Michigan in 1880 is in
Whatcom, Washington in 1900. I can send you the image of the census if you
want. He's living with the Frank Miller family and is listed as Frank
Miller's brother-in-law. George has no wife in the listing but it says he
has been married for 21 years.

Doug has sent me the image from 1900 and it has the correct age for George
snr, but states that he immigrated to the USA in 1869, whereas I know mine
was in the UK in 1871. I also know he was back in the UK in 1901, he
married May 1901 in London, and died in Essex in 1923.
Looking again at the 1880, which is the only US census I have access to, I
can find a May E CATAR and her 2yr old son Alfred CATAR (as above) living in
Huron, Michigan with her MILLER family. So it looks as if this George in
Michigan might not be mine after all.
The mystery remains about the George Hopkins CATER born 1882 and served in
WW1 - if he was son of George & Mary E above then he probably was
unconnected to my family - but it would be a strange coincidence to come
across TWO people of that combination of names and find them unrelated.
Thanks folks for your input - the search continues!

But anyway, did anyone give you the full information from that WWI
draft registration?
He is George Hopkins Cater, age 36, b. 09 April 1882 (however, THIS
section of the registration did not ask where? *%*@*). But he is
native born. He is farming with Homer Winters in Golconda, Humboldt,
Nevada. His NOK is: Mrs. W. B. Petrick, Dover, OK. He has blue eyes,
gray hair and is partly bald, medium height & build. Registration date
is 12 Sept. 1918.
In 1920 census, Homer (who is indexed as Thomas) has another hired
man. However, there is a George ???? indexed in Clover Valley,
Humboldt Co., Nevada Dist 26, Anc. 4/4, born in Kansas and father born
in Ohio. He is ranching with three other fellows. Looking at the
census page, this might be WWI George, but the name has missing links
in the letters.
And 1880 has a number of Caters in Kansas. Have fun! <g>

Re: 1890/1900 lookup please?
I'm sending you 1880, 1900 and 1910 census images for George Cater and his
parents William and Catherine that match with the WWI Draft Card. George was
born in Kansas and his parents in Ohio, so if I'm reading the thread
correctly, he doesn't match up with the GH Cater you're looking for.
Hopefully one of the other Cater families found will pan out.
