WWI enlistments

Legg inn av anna » 13 apr 2005 16:16:28

I was wondering if there is an index for WWI enlistments anywhere--I'm
not talking about the cards that the men had to fill out for the draft
boards, but the enlistment rolls.

There is microfilm at the NARA but the readers there are not very good
and my eyes are getting worse, so I was having trouble reading the
film. If there is an index at least it would give me a place to start.

My grandfather enlisted (was not drafted) and assuming a three year
hitch, he probably enlisted 1914 or 1915 maybe even 1916. (He was
working on the railroad by 1919.)

Just in case anyone has any look up sources:

Farland George Roper b. Sept 1892, Georgia. (His real name was George
Farland Roper but he told us he changed his name when he went into the
Army because he didn't want anyone calling him George.) I know he was
a Corporal in the 19th Infantry stationed at Camp Travis, San Antonio,
Texas in 1917.

Thanks for any help.

There is a compilation of WWI draft cards available on ancestry.com I've
gotten some information from this.

I knew there was a listing of the draft cards, but I was hoping there
might be some sort of listing for the enlistments.
