Does anyone have a copy of NARA film M539 Roll 29 that can look up the
following name?

Andrew Finical

Was supposedly a private in the 56th Regiment, Illinois Infantry
Company H.

If you have the information can you please email it to me at

afinical@columbus.rr.com

Many Thanks

The Civil War Soldiers & Sailors System website
(http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html) has the following:

Andrew Finical
Company H. 56 Illinois Infantry (Mechanic Fusileers.)
Side: Union
Rank in: Private
Rank out: Private
Film Number M539 roll 29

This is really no information other than what you already had, I guess. May
the film roll tells more.

I have the name of a website that will do look ups and make copies of a
civil war record for a fee. (I will not name it here because I know we
discourage
"advertising.") I have no connection with this company except that I
used them recently and was happy with the service and the reasonable
cost was well worth my time. I gave them the name of my relative and
the regiment and company he was with and the researcher sent me back 12
pages of roll calls plus 2 hospital cards. It explained why my ancestor
went in as a sergeant and came out a private. If you are interested,
please email me or send me your email and I will give you the URL of
the website privately.

NARA will do the same thing. And most of the states who made up the
Confederacy will do lookups on Confederate soldiers (I say "most"
because I've only dealt with a few of them so far, but I definitely got
my monies worth when I asked North Carolina for records on my ancestors).

I had the microfilm # and the roll # for my confederate ancestor and
went to the NARA to look at their civil war microfilm. I was able to
find the one card that showed he was in the 2nd SC Rifles and which
company he was in but not the rest of his jacket. I asked the person at
the desk about where to find the rest of the information and she said
there wasn't any more. Even though I didn't feel this was correct, I
felt that it was a dead end at my local NARA. So I resorted to having
someone else do the legwork for me. I also have a TX ancestor
(confederate) which the NARA didn't have the microfilm for (I have the
microfilm # and the roll # for him too).

I usually find the people at the NARA to be very helpful but maybe she
just wasn't in the mood. (In fact when I asked where they kept the
civil war microfilm that day--and there were only two other people
there, so she wasn't that busy--she pointed me to some copied sheets of
paper and told me I should read it.)

When you asked the "states" to do look ups, who did you ask--the state
library or a genealogical society, or ???? I hadn't thought of using
state resources for look ups--I usually just order film from my
library.

Thanks for the info.

When I obtained my father's records from WWII, I filled out a form on

the NARA website. When I obtained Civil War records from North
Carolina, I printed out request forms from the North Carolina State
Archives. Someone else had already posted basic info on the GenWeb
site(s) for my ancestors (the M.A.R.S. ID #, what year they filed for
pensions, etc.) which made it easier when it came to asking for the
records. If I would have been there in person, there would have only
been a copying fee involved, but since it was through the mail, there
was a charge of $20.00 for each inquiry (I had three). Since it would
have cost me much more than $60.00 to travel to Raleigh, I felt the
money was well spent.

North Carolina also has records for WWI and WWII service for those from
the state, but I don't know if other states would have that same
information. I think the state archives for the state where your
ancestors lived would be a good starting point.

One interesting note that I just read on the North Carolina State
Archive site -- it's easier to quote it than paraphrase it:

"The destruction of approximately 82% of the World War I military
personnel records and World War II Army personnel records in the July
1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center (Military) in St.
Louis was the greatest loss of records in the history of the United
States. However, Records of Navy, Coast Guard, and Marine Corps veterans
were not destroyed. Air Force records of servicemen with surnames
beginning with letters "A" through "I" who served between 1947 and 1964
survived. All service records dating from 1964 had been computerized
before the fire and thus are intact."

So if anyone is looking for WWI info on an ancestor and can't find it,
this might just be the reason why.

Hope that helps,

Cathy
