Which Geanology Proogram

Legg inn av Mike L. » 11 apr 2005 17:47:16

I have Generations Family Tree, however, I guess they are out of business.
I am looking for a new program. I see Family Tree Maker, Legacy Family
Tree, and Ancestral Quest.

Any suggestions 9 on the best products?

Thanks

I like Legacy, although FTM is pretty good. I actually have both programs
for different features.

You have to look at the different features and options in each
program, and decide for yourself which of them is best suited to the
way you want organize and present your data.

Personally I use PAF5 (free) because I like the way that it generates
a web site from the data file (which is largely a matter of opinion)
and because I can easily add new types of events so as to record
information that is not provided for in the basic program.

Since Legacy is free, try it first.

If you like it, stick with it.

If you don't, try one of the others.

Generations was a step-child of Reunion and Reunion for Macintosh is
still going strong. Your data should import directly.

Of course you'd have to switch platforms and leave all those malware
headaches behind.

Hi there

This is one subject that will keep 'popping' up.

Personally I always use Brother's Keeper Version 6.1 - excellent to use and
very easy to read the final prepared reports.

You can use it as 'Shareware' although I know that you get more features if
you buy it - cannot remember the price at the moment.

I prefer it to PAF or most other programmes including FTM which I have used
in the past.

I use FTM and have always been happy with it--easy to use and creates
good reports and narratives, IMHO. My only complaint with it is that I
don't think the source documentation is particularly good.

FYI, in my genealogical society, members seem to be raving about "Roots
Magic", even those people who have previously used other programs for a
long time. Haven't tried it myself but it has made me curious.

I use Legacy. I downloaded a Standard version free
(http://www.legacyfamilytree.com/) and tried out the program. There were
some extra features that I wanted (like the clipboard), so I ended up buying
the Deluxe version. Legacy has good user support and a very active
mailing list, which is extremely helpful. I don't really recommend that you
buy the Legacy manual (like I did); the Help section of the software is more
up-to-date and specific. The Legacy website has a tutorial that might help
you decide if you like the way the program is set up.

Legacy Deluxe fits my needs, except that it may not have the intricate
tree-drawing capability that some other programs might have. It will draw
trees, just not what I wanted. I bought Tree Draw Legacy as an add-on, and
I've been pleased with it.

It's nice if you can get demonstration versions first before you invest in
any program. soc.genealogy.computing is a good place to get some
information on computer programs.

I googled, and it looks like there may be an article evaluating genealogy
software here:
http://www.consumersearch.com/www/softw ... story.html

Mike, what Anna said about "Roots Magic" made me curious also. I found that
they offer a demo free version of it at::::

Great software! I have been using its successor, Family Origins, for
years and not once has it disappointed me. Very intuitive, flexible,
and lets you add just about anything you want without a hiccup!

Have been using Legacy for several years and could not be more satisfied.

They have a user group which is very active and helpful as is their own
product support people.

They have a free version and Deluxe which costs about $25. They are
constantly releasing free "fixes" which responds to user needs.

Have no connection other than a satisfied customer.

What I really love about Legacy - I use the deluxe version to create a
family web site. I needed to enhance the selection of which picture to
display for each person, so I sent an email asking it be considered for
a future enhancement. I got a personal response from them, and the
feature was added within a month. How's that for service!
