Where to send information
As you may or may not be aware, I have decided to make a listing of
all the Obituaries from my town (which is where a lot of elderly come
to die). To date I have about 500 listings, now I have to have a
place to put them on the net (preferablly a site that is free).
Can anyone make any suggestions???

There is many free hosts, this is the one I use:
free.prohosting.com
* 100 Megabytes of Disk Storage
* 1.2 Gigabytes of Monthy Bandwidth
* 1 FTP account
*** For $25 a year I use doteasy.com
Free web hosting included for registering your domain name through them.

This is a bit different than what you asked but Find A Grave allows you to
contribute information. Does your listing of obituaries show where the
indiviuals are being buried? If so, you could post them here:
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi
I am not affiliated with this website, I simply use it from time to time in
my genealogical research.

someplace to "dump" the work to so others could make use of it.

Perhaps someone will volunteer, but if you're willing to transcribe the
obits into electronic form along with an index of names, then the website
can be a simple folder or folders of files that people would download.
Nothing fancy and you aren't even forced to leave an email address for
contact. The website won't be a burden that way and you will find many
websites out there that consist solely of files like that. Here's what an
index could look like:
ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/mn/ ... bitshl.txt
and the actual obits would be a folder of files containing the obits.
It's not as though you would have to become a webpage designer.
Take a look at the US Genweb site for whichever state and county you live
in:
http://usgenweb.org/states/index.shtml
and see where you might fit in there.

ALright I see that there is a misconception. Don't really need the
background on my reasons for doing it but for whatever reason I
decided to transcribe the entire obit which turns out to look like the
following:
Published in the Ocala Star Banner, 2 March, 2005.
SALT SPRINGS - John "Pete" Carl Swendsen, 64, died Sunday, Feb. 27,
2005, at his home.
Mr. Swendsen moved to Salt Springs from his hometown of Tarpon Springs
in 1981. He was a member of Wings of Faith Church of God in Ocala.
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy "Dot" E. Swendsen, Salt Springs;
sons, William "Bill" C. Swendsen, Interlachen, and John "Andy" A.
Swendsen, Orlando; brothers, Paul Swendsen and Herman Swendsen, both
of Tarpon Springs, and Chester Swendsen, Trenton; sister, Mary Brown,
Salt Springs; four grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Thomas B. Dobies Funeral Home, Tarpon Springs, provided information.
And since I started doing this I have gathered about 500 seperate
obits on various people and was just wondering if there was someplace
that I could dump/submit these 500 items to so that anyone that wanted
to or had the name of one of the 500 would have a copy of the obit.
I do not want to set up my own web site (paranoia on my part, no
doubt) just give someone else the records (which were created in
Family Tree Maker 2005). I hope this clears up the misunderstanding.
And just to forestall any comments about accuracy these are copied
EXACTLY as they were publish.

Re: Where to send information
I would suggest you post them on the Ancestry/Rootsweb message board
for the county in which you live. (I gather from your example you live
in the US?)
I regularly read the Kalamazoo and Barry County (Michigan) boards.
They each have some volunteers who type obits and post them in this
way.

You could check with the person handling the appropriate county on USGenweb.
I'm sure they'd love them for inclusion on that site.

Florida branch. Take a look at:

Please send an email to FLGenWeb Project Coordinator

telling us. I'm confident that something can be worked out.
I don;t know why anyone would do that. Your generosity is admirable. Please let

Re: Where to send information
There are genealogy email lists for almost every county in the USA, people
join those lists and post obits and other things. These are archived.
To find the one for your town, to go http://lists.rootsweb.net/
and go down to your state, then go to the counties, and pick the county
where your town is. THere will be instructions on what email to send to join
the list.
