I am trying to view the original manifest for an ancestor
on http://www.ellisisland.org but when I click on "Original Ship Manifest", I
get line 264 of a manifest for a different ship (Southwark) and the
name Sara Schneider.

Can someone point me in a direction that will allow me to see
the original manifest that contains my ancestor?

Would the original manifest be on the Ancestry.com site. If it is
can someone email me a copy of the page that contains my ancestor?

Here is the information on my ancestor...

Name: August Nilsson
Ethnicity: Sweden
Date of Arrival: April 24, 1896
Age at Arrival: 20y 8m
Gender: M
Ship of Travel: Britannia
Port of Departure: Liverpool
Manifest Line Number: 264

Thank you,

Brenda Hammond

I just did some checking and it looks pretty grim. I located 2 other people
reported to be on the Britannia out of Liverpool on Apr 24, 1896 and they
both led to manifest pages for the Southwark out of Antwerp. The first one
was to that very same page. I then looked for people on the Southwark and
the correct date for it was Apr 29, 1896, but that link leads to the same
set of manifest pages including the one you saw.

I think this is a matter that needs to be reported to the Ellis Island
people. They must have a bad link that needs to be fixed. All? the links
for the Britannia on Apr 24 point to the pages for the Southwark on Apr 29,
1896.

I just send an email to the Ellis Island people and will keep all informed. My
guess is that it would be something they could fix fairly soon and you could do
your lookup again after the problem has been resolved.

Go to this site http://www.stevemorse.org/index.html and use the feature
Manifests (aka Missing Manifests). Type in the date, Series M237, Roll 657,
Frame 535. Please note that the ship of travel listed on the Ellis Island
site is incorrect. The actual ship of travel is Britannic. I could not
find a second page relating to your ancestor.

Here is the information on my ancestor...

Name: August Nilsson
Ethnicity: Sweden
Date of Arrival: April 24, 1896
Age at Arrival: 20y 8m
Gender: M
Ship of Travel: Britannia

Should be Britannic

Port of Departure: Liverpool

Brenda: One part of the problem may be that he is listed as being on
the BritannIA when he is really on the BritannIC from Liverpool.
Using Steve Morse Missing Manifest page (http://www.stevemorse.org)
click on missing manifests. At the bottom of the page fill in the
blanks as such: April 15, 1896, Series: M237, Roll: 657, Frame: 535
ignore everything else. Click display. The page may originally come up
as an error but then clicks in. August is at the bottom, #264. Have
fun. BTW, you may want to click thru to the end of the manifest to see
if it has a detained passengers list since August has a big "X" next
to his name.

Mike,

I have had a similar experience, where I have been unable to view the second
half of the page for one of my ancestors. I have tried Steve Morse's
website too and I have also gone through each page of the manifest for the
whole ship but still can't find this missing page. I even emailed Ellis
Island but never received a response.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,

I have had good results by emailing the Ellis Island site to report a
similar discrepancy. I believe that Robert Heiling's suggestion to do this
is the best method, I would send them another note, Alida, reminding them
that this your second request. Be patient, they have made some recent
changes that was probably part of the problem, but some of these errors
could have already been there. Mike's suggestion to use the Morse site is
also good, but Ellis Island needs to be notified.

Hi Bob,

I did send them an email on the weekend, but haven't heard from them yet.
I'll wait a few more days, then try emailing them again if it's not
resolved.

Thanks,

Hi Mike,

When I try this I get a broken image...nothing comes up. Thought
maybe it was my pop up blocker causing it, but I shut it off and tried
again - still doesn't work.

Having "contacted" Ellis Island over two years ago about a blatant screwup in
the indexing of one of my relatives, and having had no reply to that message,
nor seen any correction to their index, I'd say --- Don't hold your breath at
getting a reply, much less having the files indexed against the correct film.
That is one of the main reasons for the existence of the "www.stevemorse.org"
website. Just the other day I found yet another relative in their files, yet the
"original manifest" was of the wrong ship. Thank God for Dr. Morse's website.
And don't get me started on the greedy bastards at Ellis Island whose main
purpose is to raise lots of money to pay themselves big salaries. Why else would
the island be closed for so long after 911 when they didn't want to spend THEIR
money for security improvements??? And of course our stupid government gave them
MORE money for security. BLAH !!!!!
