Need help to find my grandfather's family

Hello

I'm having problems tracing the ancestors of my grandfather Thomas Hynes who
married and died in Liverpool, Lancashire, England. Unfortunately Thomas
died when my mother was only 3 years old and she can remember few details.
You can view Thomas Hynes' marriage certificate here:
http://home.btconnect.com/desgrenfell/T ... es1913.jpg.

Based on his death and marriage certificates, he would have been born around
1888. By searching through UK birth indexes and censuses, my best current
candidate is the family headed by Thomas Hynes Snr in the 1901 UK census.
You can view census record here:
http://home.btconnect.com/desgrenfell/T ... ry1901.pdf
(note that Hynes is spelt Hines and Thomas Jnr is not listed - he's at his
maternal grandmother's).

As far as I see, Thomas's parents were Thomas Hynes and Mary Ellen Durr -
both born in Lancashire to Irish parents. Then the trail goes cold, I can't
find either Thomas Snr, Mary Ellen or any of their children in the 1891 UK
census - I've scoured Ancestry's site using all conceivable spellings.

What I do find, however is a young Thomas Hynes in the 1880 US census. His
birthplace and that of his siblings indicates that the family started in
Liverpool (based on bmd indexes) - though both parents are Irish. You can
see the family by searching for Thomas Hynes born 1867 England on the LDS
1880 US census. At the same time there is a strong candidate for Mary Ellen
Durr in the 1881 UK census living in Liverpool.

Is there any way of checking whether Thomas Hynes (born 1867) was in the US
in 1890/1? As far as I can see the 1890 US census was mostly destroyed - are
there any other records I can search? It looks like Thomas's potential
grandmother (Mary Hynes aged 44 from the 1880 US census) is still at
Passaic, NJ in 1900 but there is no sign of her son Thomas Hynes
(potentially my ggfather).

So, I'm looking into the possibility that my ggfather was Thomas Hynes, born
in Liverpool in 1867, emigrated to the US (Passaic, NJ) in around 1870 and
then returned to Liverpool in the mid 1880's to marry Mary Ellen Durr and
produce my grandfather Thomas Hynes. The family may have returned to Passaic
or elsewhere in the period 1890-1900 since they are absent from the UK 1891
census. Yes, it all sounds a bit far fetched, but how can I test it?

Fwiw, I believe all these Thomas Hynes were fairly poor working class men so
would most likely have gone wherever there was work. I've done a check in
the Ellis Island database but can't find matching records. Are there any
other passenger/emigration/returnee lists I can search?

Any help or advice would be most welcome. I'd be happy to supply more info
on request.

Many Thanks
Des

(Sorry about all these Thomas Hynes - my uncle and cousin are also Thomas
Hynes - 5 generations!).
