I am doing historical research on 75 Virginians that sailed to California
together in1849. I am finding a need to keep track of their family relations
so I checked out the Family Tree Maker website. It appears to be user
friendly from the ad. By the way, I have no genealogy experience. Before I
purchase the program can someone tell me:
1. Can Family Tree Maker be used to track the genealogy of more than one
family. Some of my Virginians are related and some are not. I would want to
keep track of the relations of more than one individual.
2.The ad states that the latest program searches Ancestry.Com. Is that a pay
site that will charge in order to get search results?
3. Are there other programs that are available that are comparable or better
at a reasonable price?
I like the idea of keeping the genealogy records on my computer instead of
paper pedigree charts etc.
I am sure these questions are very basic but I would appreciate any answers
I can get. If I get a user friendly program my wife wants me research her
family; that may be fun too.

Depends on how you want to do it. In legacy, you could set up a family
file for each family, which is the way you SHOULD do it. But I have had
some "fragments" from time to time; families whose connections with mine
were disproven. They are in my master file, but not connected to any of
the proven family lines. But this is not a good practice, and I try to
keep those fragments in their own files. I can always import them later.
I can access them by searching the index.
It is a pay site, but I don't know how those search results are handled.
I downloaded Legacy for free. After a year, I decided to purchase it and
get the advanced features.
I have found Legacy to be easy enough to use. The full version has some
neat functions such as Chronology View: it displays the individual's file
in an easy to read format.
It also generates any kind of report you could want, and will even
publish the file as a website, with options to choose from.

Yes, each "tree" is a seperate file.
Yes, ancesry.com is a pay service.
Yes but I have no experience with other programs. FTM has pretty much filled
my requirements although they are a little "pushy" about thier other
products.
Just remember to keep a ackup of everthing.

Re: FAMILY TREE MAKER
No! The Muslems are promised a different bunch of Virginians. These sailed
on the ship Glenmore in April 1849 and arrived in San Francisco in October
1849. They were met at the dock by some Christians
They were members of the Madison Mining & Trading Co. which purchased the
ship, outfitted it and sailed it to the Golden Gate. Most went to the Mother
Lode mining region of the Sierra Nevada foothills to check out the mines.
They found it hard work consequently most left. The majority came from
aristocratic families and therefore did not need to dig for the gold. A few
settled here (California) but most returned to Virginia over the next 1-7
years. The ship had 5 doctors aboard and several attorneys.

Yes. I am using it for my 1-place study, which means keeping track of all
the (unrelated) families in a community. I've found it's "show the trees of
everyone in the database" very useful for locating individuals who've
gotten lost among the bigger families!
Ignore the trimmings such as cds, "free" subscriptions, etc, that are
advertised with all of this software. The important thing is to find a
programme that suits your needs - things such as an Ancestry search can
always be done separately, when you choose to do it. In your position, I
would get demos of as many programmes as possible and try them all. As long
as they can read/write GEDCOM, you can always change late if you want to,
without re-entering your data.
That all said, I like FTM 2005.
