Help - Dead End...
I have run into a dead end on my grandfather's side I don't know how to
get past.
My Grandfather's name was Hugh Collins, born October 18th 1909, died
December 28th, 1983.
His mother was Mary Lou Pate, Born March 20th, 1882 in Livia, KY.
His father was known as "Lon" Collins. However, I can find no more
information on him.
When I search her name, I get a hit, but the marriage section says
"'Unknown' Collins", Born about 1880 in Kentucky.
Any tips on how to get past this, or find his real name?
Thanks in advance.

Re: Help - Dead End...
Can you provide a few more details? Such as where (the county) your
grandfather was born, the county where Mary Lou and Lon were wed.
Have you tried to obtain a copy of Hugh's death certificate? The names
of his parents might be listed there. Also, the name of her husband
might be on Mary Lou's death certificate.

Some additional questions -- what was the name of Hugh's wife, and what
were their children's names? Also, did Hugh have any brothers and
sisters? Did Hugh have a middle name?
Thanks,

Re: Help - Dead End...
I am a bit new at this, so please bear with me...
Hugh was born in Daviess County Kentucky, in Utica
I am guessing that Mary Lou and Lon were wed in Daviess County, KY as
well, but not sure.
I will try to get a copy of his death certificate, but not sure where to
look. I will try the court house in the county he died tomorrow.
Thanks,

Re: Help - Dead End...
Hugh's wifes name IS Virginia Aloyious Millay. She is still alive but
only remembers his dad as "Lon". All of their children are still alive
as well - Charles Faye, Barbara Jane, Mary Ann, David Lee (all Collins
of course).
Hugh had one sister named Veola (come to think of it, I think he had
three sisters - I'll check with my mother tomorrow). She died sometime
in the 80's, but I have been unable to find any information on her
either. She was never married, best I can tell.
Hugh's middle name was Toliver.
Evidently this "Lon" fellow was quite a character and really was not
revered much by his family - sort of abandoned the wife and kids and did
his own thing. Rumor has it he tried to commit suicide a couple of times.
Thanks for the help!

Re: Help - Dead End...
Thanks for the additional information. I've found one Lon Collins so
far. In 1903, a Lon Collins was a witness to a marriage in Webster
County, KY. This Lon Collins is also in the 1900 Federal Census for
Kentucky, Webster County, Sebree -- but ancestry has him indexed as
"Low" Collins (looking at the handwriting, it's Lon, not Low).
Here is the listing. I can't read the name for the head of household,
who is one of Lon's brothers. Ancestry has it as "Leebee"
Collins, ?, Head, Mar 1863, 37, S, Farmer, born KY, father bor TN,
mother born KY
Dan. W., Father, Apr 1839, 61, wd, born TN, father born NC, mother born
GA (started to write farmer for occupation, then stopped)
Lon., Brother, Aug 1871, 28, wd, Farmer, born KY, father born TN, mother
born KY
Lum, Brother, Apr 1875, 25, married 4 years, other info same as Lon's
Stella, Sister-in-law, 20, 2 children born, 2 still living, born KY,
parents born KY
Basil, nephew, Sep 1897, 2, born KY, parents born KY
unnamed, nephew, Jan 1900, 4/12, born KY, parents born KY
(the marriages that are transcribed on the Webster county GenWeb site
has a Lynn Collins marrying Estella Mitchell Dec 15, 1897)
Did Hugh ever live in Indiana? The reason I'm asking is because there
are a Lon and Hugh T. Collins living as boarders in Indiana in the 1930
census:
1930 Federal Census, Indiana, Lake County, East Chicago
Year: 1930; Census Place: East Chicago, Lake, Indiana; Roll: 600; Page:
3B; Enumeration District: 96; Image: 1069.0.
Smith, Walter, Head
Ethelyn, wife
Robert J., son
Collins, Lon, boarder, 45, Married, age at first marriage was 25, born
KY, parents born KY, working as laborer in oil refinery
Collins, Hugh T., 20, Single, born KY, parents born KY, working as
laborer for bridge co.
Of course, the ages for Lon Collins in the two censuses don't match
<grin>. So far, I can't find Mary Lou Collins or Veola, but someone
else might have better luck. Anyway, I like mysteries, so I'll keep
looking <grin>

Don't know whether this is the right family or not, but as to the names,
they are all still in Webster county in 1910. Lon is Alonzo, Lum is Columbus
and Leebe is Lee B. (Actually looks like Leslie and Les B. to me.) They are
all on the same census page here:

Re: Help - Dead End...
I'm sending you images of the 1910 and 1920 census for Hugh and his parents.
On the 1920 census, it shows his father as Alonzo Collins and just Lon in
1910. There are a surprising number of Alonzo Collins out there. Although
the ages are close, Hugh's father doesn't match with the Alonzo Collins in
Webster county mentioned in the previous messages. I'll keep looking to see
if I can turn up anything else.

A special veterans census still survives for Carter County, Kentucky and a
transcript may be found at the address below. It includes one Lon Collins
who was old enough to serve in the Civil War. While there are no
guarantees, this means he was certainly old enough to have a son circa
1880 named for him. Worth a look, anyhow.

Hello Phillip, don't give up. I was in the same predicament as you not too
long ago, and with the expertise help of Tara, I now have information all
the way back to my greatgreat grandfather/mother. I now have all there
obituaries, and know where they are buried, including the grave location,

your help Tara. Everyone that pitches in here and helps deserves a big

1920 Census, Owensboro, Daviess Co, KY
ED 41, page 9B
Alonzo Collins head age 41 b KY
Mary L Collins wife age 37 b KY
Catherine Collins dau age 14 b KY
page break
Veola Collins dau age 12 b KY
Hugh T Collins son age 10 b KY
Emogene Collins dau age 8 b KY
Seems to be 1220 Missouri Avenue
See if you can confirm 10 Mar 1878 date of birth for Alonzo Collins
Or Dec 1879 and older brother named Luther
I tried to forward his e-mails to you, but you've got that stuff in
yours to prevent spam, and I can't figure out the correct address. So,
if you can e-mail me privately with your actual e-mail, I can forward
Joel's e-mails to you.
Also, the marriage that I mentioned that Lon was a witness to? It was
in 1903 in Webster County and was the marriage of L. B. Collins. This
morning it hit me that that is most likely Lon's older brother, the one
that was indexed on the 1900 census as "Leebee". You can find more
details on that marriage on the Webster County, KY GenWeb site.

I've located Mary and her daughter Emogene in the 1930 census:
Year: 1930; Census Place: Owensboro, Daviess, Kentucky; Roll: 741; Page:
6B; Enumeration District: 9; Image: 702.0.
Collins, Mary, Head, 48, married, age at first marriage 20, no
occupation listed
Emogene, daughter, 18, single, laborer in a laundry
They are living on East Fifth Street
Also, this time I found a Lon Collins in Webster County in the 1930
census, living a few houses down from Lee Collins (the one wed in 1903
in Webster County), so I think that eliminates the Webster County Lon
Collins of previous census records as being your Lon Collins.
