Mary Mills lookup please
Hi,
If you have the records portion of Ancestry and can find a Mary Mills born
June 14, 1844 in New York, please let me know. I suspect there weren't any
birth records kept in NY then however. Please educate me on this issue. If
I cannot obtain a birth record and cannot seem to find her in the 1850
census with a father named Jacob, does anyone have suggestions as to how I
can find her mother's name?
Thanks,
Nutty

Nutty,
I'll try to do a look up but do you have any other info on Mary? What city
or county was she born in? Did she have any siblings? Did she have a
middle name? Anything else like that would help me narrow the search.

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
Hi Alida,
Unfortunately that is about all I know. I did find out just yesterday that
her father, Jacob, is buried under the name Mill, instead of Mills. So that
was a big jump for me. He died at age 72 (in March of 1888) and is buried
in Philadelphia, PA., in the same burial lot as my Mary Mill/s Hummel. A
"clue" might be that there is another Jacob Mills buried in that same lot as
well. That Jacob Mills is 2 to 3 years younger than Mary. Perhaps a
brother???? But I have no proof. In fact I am "assuming" Jacob Mill is her
father since his death age would make him born in 1816 or 1815. Just the
right age to have had a daughter born in 1844. If you are able to find
anything please write to me at NancyCatherine@nospamcomcast.net. Just take
out the "nospam" portion of this email address.
Thanks,
Nutty

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
This is one possibility but it doesn't really add up. For one thing "that"
Jacob child was older rather than younger than Mary. And Mary, indeed, was
born in NY.
Am I to assume there would be no data base of births in NY in 1844? Sure
would've made it easier if there were such records. The only resource I
have now is the census, which I do have at Ancestry. But I do not have
the "records" portion of the subscription offerings.

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
g'day nutty
with such a common name you probably need
to provide much more detail for a third party to
be able to assist.
focussing on finding her in the 1850 census :
remember that while ancestry.com indexing is fairly
good, in my experience about 10 percent have some errors
and about 2 percent are seriously flawed and that does
not take into account the mistakes the enumerators themselves
made. if you are confident as to location you can simply
trawl though that portion of the census page by page until you
find the individual. the human eye is an amazing filter.
generally, what information do you already have on this
person and where was the information obtained?
are you sure of the birthdate? if extracted from the
church register, was was the full content of the entry
with all detail, no matter how apparently peripheral?
when you say new york do you mean NY state,
NY city or NY county (if there is / was one)?
have you already located mary in the 1860 census?
did the family migrate within the state or beyond?
do you know names and ages of any of mary's siblings?

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
Pretty much all you are asking I have listed in this thread. I ONLY know
her birth date from her death certificate, which I do indeed believe to be
accurate since it agrees with her census information to the day! I have no
idea WHERE in NY she was born. I know nothing else about siblings except
the guess that her brother was the Jacob Mills buried in the same lot ... he
is only 2 or 3 years younger than her. But it could be a cousin, etc. Not
sure. I do NOT have her census image for either 1850 or 1860 because the
puzzle pieces just plain don't fit. I had suspected the German lineage
might have been incorrect on Mary's married census images, which I do have
.... in total. So, with such a common name I guess I would need some other
resource rather than a census image. Not sure if there is such a resource.
Thanks,

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
I do have the census subscription and have wondered about this one you
mention as well. But I can't prove it would be correct with so many facts
just not lining up. I am wondering if her mother died young and she was
being raised by another family. Since none of the census images seem to be
correct there is no way I can guess which one is right. There is also one
in Orange County, NY that looks like a possibility but not right on. I need
something other than census records to cinch this one in.

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
I think I may have gotten lucky on this one. Your Mary Mills-Hummel is the
same one that married John Albert Hummel? Occupation: Shoe Fitter? If so, it
looks like a mistake was made on the 1880 census. The Jacob M. Hummel at the
bottom of their household is listed as father-in-law, which should make his
last name Mill/s, not Hummel. Possibly the enumerator misunderstood and
thought Mill was his middle name and put it as an initial? Anyway, he's
listed as a shoemaker and this listing here:
Name: Jacob Mill
Age: 37
Estimated birth year: abt 1813
Birth place: Germany
Gender: Male
Home in 1850: Northern Liberties Ward 7, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Page: 532
Roll: M432_811
....matches your info pretty well. Jacob is a shoemaker, born in Germany.
Mary's age is right and even the older brother Jacob is there. The only
thing that doesn't fit is the place of birth for Mary. Also, Jacob's year of
birth doesn't match your gravestone, but neither does the 1880 census
listing, if that's him. Of course, if your Mary isn't the same one that I
mentioned in the 1880 census, then all this is completely wrong....so, um,
ignore it.

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
Nevermind.... I didn't get PC Sprague's original post.... but looking back
through the quoted bits in the other messages, it's the same 1850 listing. I
also mis-read the original post and thought Jacob was an older brother.
Hmmm...back to the coffee pot and then back to the drawing board.

I think I may have gotten lucky on this one. Your Mary Mills-Hummel is the
same one that married John Albert Hummel? Occupation: Shoe Fitter? If so,
it looks like a mistake was made on the 1880 census. The Jacob M. Hummel at
the bottom of their household is listed as father-in-law, which should make
his last name Mill/s, not Hummel. Possibly the enumerator misunderstood and
thought Mill was his middle name and put it as an initial? Anyway, he's
listed as a shoemaker and this listing here:
Name: Jacob Mill
Age: 37
Estimated birth year: abt 1813
Birth place: Germany
Gender: Male
Home in 1850: Northern Liberties Ward 7, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Page: 532
Roll: M432_811
...matches your info pretty well. Jacob is a shoemaker, born in Germany.
Mary's age is right and even the older brother Jacob is there. The only
thing that doesn't fit is the place of birth for Mary. Also, Jacob's year
of birth doesn't match your gravestone, but neither does the 1880 census
listing, if that's him. Of course, if your Mary isn't the same one that I
mentioned in the 1880 census, then all this is completely wrong....so, um,
ignore it.

I do have the census subscription and have wondered about this one you
mention as well. But I can't prove it would be correct with so many
facts
just not lining up. I am wondering if her mother died young and she was
being raised by another family. Since none of the census images seem to
be
correct there is no way I can guess which one is right. There is also
one
in Orange County, NY that looks like a possibility but not right on. I
need
something other than census records to cinch this one in.
Thanks,

I found her in 1850 census:
Name: Mary Mill
Age: 5
Estimated birth year: abt 1845
Birth place: Pennsylvania
Gender: Female
Home in 1850 (City,County,State): Northern Liberties Ward 7,
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
Page: 532
Roll: M432_811
She had a brother Jacob age 9.
If you want the image please let me know.

A

the

Nutty,
I'll try to do a look up but do you have any other info on Mary? What
city
or county was she born in? Did she have any siblings? Did she have a
middle name? Anything else like that would help me narrow the search.

Hi,
If you have the records portion of Ancestry and can find a Mary Mills
born
June 14, 1844 in New York, please let me know. I suspect there
weren't
any
birth records kept in NY then however. Please educate me on this
issue.
If
I cannot obtain a birth record and cannot seem to find her in the
1850
census with a father named Jacob, does anyone have suggestions as to
how
I
can find her mother's name?
Thanks,
Nutty

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
How nice of you to keep at this. I needed this. My brother died last week
and it has been so difficult. He was only 56.
I have often wondered about that 1880 John Albert Hummel post of that
"father-in-law". You have the right family. But did the information giver
give the wrong information and meant it was HER father-in-law, in which case
he would be a Hummel? Or was it indeed the HOH father-in-law? I have not
figured that out as yet.
Take care,
Nutty

Nevermind.... I didn't get PC Sprague's original post.... but looking back
through the quoted bits in the other messages, it's the same 1850 listing.
I
also mis-read the original post and thought Jacob was an older brother.
Hmmm...back to the coffee pot and then back to the drawing board.

Re: Mary Mills lookup please
Church records - but you would need to know the town or parish. Perhaps looking
at those documents for her children would lead you to her information.

I had suspected the German lineage
might have been incorrect on Mary's married census images, which I do have
... in total. So, with such a common name I guess I would need some other
resource rather than a census image. Not sure if there is such a resource.
