1749 New France question

Legg inn av singhals » 28 mar 2005 17:09:27

"In ... 1749, ... the Governor of New France sent southward Pierre
Joseph de Ce Loron, de Blainville, an officer in his military
establishment, ..."

The above is from an old book; I assume the fact itself is accurate, but
le pauvre Pierre's name seems odd. Anyone know whether it's right, or
if not what it's supposed to be instead?

Thanks! Cheryl

Another cite gives his name as in the following: "Beauharnois to Minister,
Montreal, June 30, 1739, Arch. Nat., Col., C11A, 71: 36-36v. The source for
the personnel of the expedition is the expense accounts in Arch. Nat., Col.,
C11A, 71: 151 ff. Paul Joseph le Moyne, Baron, de Longueuil, (1701-1778),
was a brother of Iberville and Bienville. Pierre Joseph Celoron, Sieur de
Blainville or Bienville, (1693-1759), was a distinguished French officer
chiefly noted for his expedition into the Ohio valley in 1749"

As is common with that era the spelling of the name is somewhat
variable, such as Ce'Loron or Celoron

Do a Google search on Pierre Joseph de Celeron and you get quite a few hits.
