Click "OK". Nothing happens. Nothing at all. No window allows me to

to where I can save it or to name the file. Nada! Nothing!

I want to get back to my old viewer but cannot do so. I have no "go

in

I
would advise everyone not to download this new program or beware! You
may
lose the whole option of saving any census images again. Maybe you will
be
able to if I am seeing others can but I cannot. How I wish I could

Thanks,

I tried saving to ANCESTRY and it brought up that page where I have
saved things a while ago. The subject line was blank (because I was not
given any option to name it with the person's name in the census).

I tried to save the image to DESKTOP, it seemed to do so, but it is not
on my desktop.

Robert, thanks for the reminder to check the Java engine. I am now
running the latest JRE 1.5.0_02 and the SAVE button does not start a
window. The floating message "SAVE- Save image" appears when I hover
over the icon. I guess that means this bit of Ancestry's code is
working:

onclick="s_objectID='x_save';javascript:SavePopup()" title="Save -
Save image"><img src="http://c.ancestry.com/i/content/tools/save.gif"/><br>Save</td>

Nutty, a question. Is the PC you are using on a network? Is the
modem connected directly to the PC or via a router?

When you are trying to save you can look at Ancestry's source code
using the browser's (VIEW->SOURCE). Near the end I see a reference to
an IP address within the range of user networks. Anyone have any
suggestions why a 192.168.x.x IP address should appear in a script?

Cheers, Argon

Hi

This may be a Java problem especially if popup window does not appear
as I remember I had a similar problem awhile back with a different
program and I up dated my Java engine and everything worked fine after
that.go here to get latest Java engine http://java.com/en/

Nutty, I have precisely the same problem. The Javascript behind the
SAVE button does not work on my WIN98SE system. PRINT and SHARE
buttons bring up their windows ok and both those functions work. I
know other users can save images so I am confident that Ancestry did
not intend to block the feature.

I have tried turning off all IE6 security controls, firewall, virus
checker and installed the latest MS updates. I have switched to
another pc (on the same wireless network) and that fails in the same
way.

I guess there is some configuration detail to adjust, or a conflict to
resolve. I hope our technical friends at Ancestry will accept that a
few of us have a valid problem and they will help us to get back to
work on our research.

Cheers, Argon

Hi
The Java Plugin is only part of it you need a Java engine to run the
plug in and that site is to replace your engine which was out of dated
on my computer and which was the cause of my problem. I don't think
the engine shows up in the control panel. Good luck in installing SP2.
It was the best thing for me and it really works great.

Java can be updated for either 98 or xp there is a version for both if
your pop window is not working it is problibly a Java engine problem.

Update ... I just called Ancestry again. They will be releasing a patch
this week for all of us who have had this problem. Meanwhile we can save
the image to "my ancestry" and then it will be there to save once we have
the patch installed. I wonder how we'll know if the patch is on there.
Tech support did not know how it would be made known once it was released.
Anyway thanks to everyone who gave some good advice along the way.

From past experience with Ancestry.com, when you go to view an image you will
be automatically prompted to download a revised viewer. IOW the web-page will
determine that the viewer you have is out-of-date and ask you if you want to
download a new one. I suspect it will work something like this.

I am sorry for the frustration. We regret any frustration this issue

Pressing F11 puts it into 'Full Screen' mode and it works on a
toggle, so pressing F11 again exits the Full Screen mode.

Thanks. Didn't know that.

I now see Ancestry has a button to toggle between full screen and the
other.

Yes, but the Ancestry 'Full Screen' toggle button doesn't appear to work
if viewing the pages in *Avant Browser*, so I have to use the F11 on my
keyboard instead.

I see. By the way, can you tell me what each function key does, either
in Ancestry or in a MS Office application? They differ depending on
which application a person is in, right?

Yes, it differs depending on the programme.

Link to Function key functions....THANK YOU!!

If I use nothing beyond the 'refresh' key, that made my day. I'm reading
this from my WebTV/MsnTV so can't test it right now, but does this
refresh work for zip disks as well as floppies? I have an external zip
drive, and was going nutso trying to check the free space on my 8 zip
disks one after the other. "Gee that's really odd.... the first three
all have exactly the same amount of free space. Hmmm."

Then I looked up at the actual files displayed and realized the list had
not changed from one disk to the next. @#%

Ancestry has just changed the Enhanced Viewer. Next time you view an
image you may be offered a download of the Enhanced Viewer Update "to
eliminate several Enhanced Image Viewer Technical problems". It
claims to fix the problems of black images, inability to save images
with WIN98 and fuzzy images during download.

WIN98 USERS BEWARE!!

I have tried this download. It gives up during installation and then
displays a message to confirm it has failed. Next time the PC is
started it halts during booting because of a problem with the Registry
left by the installer.
It behaved the same way on two WIN98 machines.

This does not inspire me with confidence about standards at Ancestry.

Here is my current workaround to save a reasonable quality image:

refuse the dowload and use the "continue without updating" link.
the image loads then click link "having problems viewing" at top of
the page.
Select "Basic Viewer"
In the pull down menu (next to Options) change 50% to 200%
Right click on the image then left click the menu item "save picture
as"
Type a name in the filename box then click the save button.

That should save a GIF file about 3000 x 1900 around 900k. If you
prefer a JPEG you will have to load the GIF into your favourite photo
editor and save it back as a JPEG.

All that hassle because Ancestry did not bother to check one little
button before sending out the first release. Causing further nuisance
by sending out an untested repair is an insult to subscribers.

Cheers, Argon

I just use the ol' HTML view in Firefox. Works on Win98, it's fast, it's
eficient, and doesn't need IE to run. The only reason you need the
viewer is because IE is such a dinosaur.

I appreciate the warning. I no longer have to click "continue without
downloading viewer" or words to that effect however, each time I go to an
image. That's one small step for humanity. <lol> Will they continue to
try to create a usable advanced viewer?

ANCESTRY ENHANCED VIEWER NOW WORKS UNDER WIN98

The current update works for my WIN98 system. The SAVE button now
launches a normal window that allows the image to be saved as a JPEG.

Nutty, from what you say it seems you are no longer being offered a
download. Tough - so now you won't be offered the one that does work!

For that problem Ancestry Support suggests emptying the cache and
deleting all cookies. So once again:

WIN98 USERS BEWARE!

Deleting all Cookies is misguided overkill. Sure, it will delete all
of Ancestry's mess but it would also delete your settings for all the
competent sites you visit.

I took a different approach and deleted every cookie that mentioned
ancestry. I found four. That still did not offer me a download when I
accessed an image so I fetched it myself direct from the source at:

http://content.ancestry.com/Browse/install_x_ocx.aspx

It installed and worked as well as the original viewer. Come to think
of it perhaps are we back where we started? ;))

If all else fails you may need to do something like I did (if you know
what you are doing and have backed up everything. Don't blame me if it
gets worse.)

I'm off to catch up research missed durng the downtime. And of course
I must ask Accounts to extend my subscription by at least these lost
weeks.

Cheers, Argon
