new ancestry viewer problem
HI,
Does anyone know how to save a census image with the brand new ancestry
viewer? I try to save it but it comes up and says it is saved to my hard
drive but who knows where that might be since it never gives me any option
to name the file, save it where I want it, etc. Thanks in advance, Nutty

In article <YvSdnWuB3b1SC6XfRVn-hQ@comcast.com>, nanospam@nospamcomcast.net
says...
When I select 'save', I cet the pop-up that gives the choice of saving to local
disk or to the ancestry.com site.
I selected 'local disk' and then a 'file save window' opened, allowing me to
set the destination and file name.
So the new viewer works for me.

I see what you mean. My ends up in C:/.../documents and settings, but I
can't open the two files for the same image.
You can do FILE > SAVE AS and put it where you want it. Perhaps you

Re: new ancestry viewer problem
OK ... this is getting to me big time. First of all I thank you all for
baring with me on this one ... Here's the exact thing that is happening for
me.
I have image on screen. I go up to "file", "save as" but when trying to do
it that way it says "the web page could not be saved to the selected
location".
There is now a "save" icon above the image to the right ... third icon in
.... after "Help" and "Share". I click on that. A window comes up with
"save options". You have a choice to click on a radio button to "save image
to" either the computer or my ancestry. I click on my computer option.
Click "OK". Nothing happens. Nothing at all. No window allows me to chose
to where I can save it or to name the file. Nada! Nothing!
I want to get back to my old viewer but cannot do so. I have no "go back"
program on this computer that is running on Windows 98SE. I can't get in
touch with Ancestry. Have tried the help files. No help on this issue. I
would advise everyone not to download this new program or beware! You may
lose the whole option of saving any census images again. Maybe you will be
able to if I am seeing others can but I cannot. How I wish I could start
this day over again.
Thanks,
Nutty ... and getting worse!

Nutty,
I don't know anything about Windows 98SE but you may want to go to Internet
Options and check to see if there is something which blocks unassigned
ActiveX controls or if you must enable a third party browser extension in
order to make this new image viewer work.

After you click the 'save icon' and select 'computer option' and click OK a
java script 'instruction window pops up. The instruction is 'Right click
the image' and select 'Save image...' in the pop-up menu.
At that point you get a normal 'Save As' panel. Can only save as GIF.

You see, that is what is NOT happening for me. Nothing happens after I
click on the radio button to save it. No popup window. Nothing. I
rebooted to no avail. Does anyone know what the name of the new program is
so I can uninstall it? I hate to not be able to save my images anymore.
What's the use of the subscription then? Must I write it all down? Even
that is not foolproof. I want the image itself! You can imagine my
frustration.

I just tried that with an open census page. Clicked on the SAVE icon, then
selected the Computer radio button and OKAY. I then got a Save As window
(defaulting to my image file storage site) with the file name blank and Jpeg
File as the only Save As Type option. I typed in a file name and clicked Save.
A 761,189kb Jpeg file now appears in my thumbnails with a perfect full census
page. That seems to be the easiest (and only?) way to save a page with the new

After you click the 'save icon' and select 'computer option' and click OK
a
java script 'instruction window pops up. The instruction is 'Right click

At that point you get a normal 'Save As' panel. Can only save as GIF.

You know, last night, I created a Folder in "My Pictures" (because that

I found that I "could" save an entire image. Like I just stated, I
don't know if I can save a portion of one.
I don't know a whole lot about this, but you could take a look at Java.
Start > Settings > Control Panel > Java and see what version you have.
I may not have the most current, but when I went through "some" of the
steps to upgrade Java, the small dialog box stated that there may be
harmful code that could damage the computer. Needless to say, I backed off.
Try saving again using the SAVE ICON, you might just get the option to
name a file (blank area) and note that it will save it as a .jpg file.
First, however, define a place to keep all Ancestry files you intend to
save by creating a special Folder.

Click "OK". Nothing happens. Nothing at all. No window allows me to

I inquired on soc.genealogy.computing and someone raved about it. At
least that is how I interpreted it.
I think it is workable, but I find that the "toolbar" takes up too much
valuable room on the monitor.
What I am not certain of and need to try out is, can one save an
enlarged (ex: 75%) portion of a census or does this plug-in only save
the entire image? If so, than how can a person edit it?!
I haven't tried to save a portion of a census page, but when I did save the
entire page, the (jpeg) file was about 750kb. This should be detailed enough to
crop out whatever segment you want to save and still have plenty of detail left.

Removing the plugin is a matter of deleting the file from the plugin

As I posted earlier, saving the census image from Ancestry's new viewer
*does*
work. I appear to be using the same system as you-- IE, XP, etc.-- and
was able
to use the <save> icon and save a copy of the census page to the folder
where I
store images. After selecting the <computer> radio button, I got the same
window as I would by right-clicking on an image, selecting <save image
as>, and
then selecting the place I want the image to reside. If you are still
unable to
do a save from the new Ancestry viewer, it's probably just a matter of
playing
with one or more of the setting adjustments in your computer that others
have
suggested.

hard
drive but who knows where that might be since it never gives me any
option
to name the file, save it where I want it, etc. Thanks in advance,
Nutty
I had not been to Ancestry for a few weeks but after hearing about this
new
viewer I went and took a look last night. When I got to the point where it
asked if I wanted to install it I remembered what you said about not
having
a "go back" on your system and I was deciding whether to make a restore
point or not when the page automatically changed. All this next page said
was to continue "without" installing click here. So I did and this is what
came up:
http://home.woh.rr.com/steel33/genealogy/ancestry.jpg
Now this is not the MrSid viewer I last used. My question is is this what
the "new viewer" that you are using looks like? I don't see how my viewer
changed without installing anything new unless Ancestry did it even though
I
told it not to.

Is Internet Explorer your default browser or the one you use for
Ancestry? If so, is it the latest version? If it is a lower version,
maybe that is why you don't get the window.

I haven't tried to save a portion of a census page, but when I did save the
entire page, the (jpeg) file was about 750kb. This should be detailed
enough to
crop out whatever segment you want to save and still have plenty of detail
left.
Bruce
Maybe there is something I am missing, but (1) there is no CROP tool
when I open the .jpg image (100%), each censuses is different in size
and readability. There is a ZOOM IN tool and a ZOOM OUT tool which
allows one to "see" the image more clearly. (2) Problem: no way to get
rid of these tools, once selected for that image!
How would I crop the image? I know how in other MS programs.
LC
I'm saving my census image to the software program where I keep all my images.
Thumbs+Plus, in my case. In this software I can display the census page,
outline the area I want to crop, select <crop>, and I can save just that portion
I want. If you have somewhere on your computer, other than a simple folder,
where you can store and manipulate image files, that's where you would do the
cropping.

That's what you would think but somehow it is not there either. I tried

Just called Ancestry. The tech support people are struggling to find out

Certain settings or conditions on a computer may prevent the Ancestry

You may have declined the installation.

Re: new ancestry viewer problem
Do you have this problem with all web pages?
Do you have a firewall? spyware blocker?
My guess is that something on your computer is causing this. You may try to
restore the defaults in your browser, download a better spyware blocker, get a
good antivirus program, or last but not least - reinstall your operating system.

Re: new ancestry viewer problem
Very rarely do I print out the image due to the fact that it is so small to
put on one page. Instead I have the images saved to my hard drive. Then I
put them on a CD. That way I can print anything that comes up that I want a
hard copy for any time I want. You can crop out portions to enlarge them in
almost any picture program. Just print the portion you cropped out OR do a
"save as" to make it a separate file. Just make sure you don't save the
cropped portion under the same name of you will lose your original.

Maybe there is something I am missing, but (1) there is no CROP tool
when I open the .jpg image (100%), each censuses is different in size
and readability. There is a ZOOM IN tool and a ZOOM OUT tool which
allows one to "see" the image more clearly. (2) Problem: no way to
get rid of these tools, once selected for that image!
How would I crop the image? I know how in other MS programs.
LC
I'm saving my census image to the software program where I keep all
my images. Thumbs+Plus, in my case. In this software I can display
the census page, outline the area I want to crop, select <crop>, and
I can save just that portion I want. If you have somewhere on your
computer, other than a simple folder, where you can store and
manipulate image files, that's where you would do the cropping.
Bruce
I guess what I meant to say, is Ancestry doesn't provide us a way to
crop and save. We can, however, adjust the image and print it as we
adjusted it.
I have found a value in having the entire image. I recently discovered
an ancestor's in-laws listed two households away from the ancestor.
Another census page matched exactly the guest list at my great-
grandmother's wedding.
Christopher,
Boy, you surely lucked out.
I generally check that when I view the page in the first place. The
problem, often times, with saving the entire image (although recently I
have been doing that) is the print is so small it cannot be read.
I could copy and paste into MS Word, but I think it would be nice to
save a portion of an entire image in a readable-sized "font"
(handwriting).
Maybe there is something I am not understanding. I hope to find out soon.
Thanks,
Lani

So often I can't seem to get the proportions correct to print out two halves
and put them together. That's why I save them all on CDs and then can zoom
in on any portion whenever I want to look again. But everyone has their own
way to do it and everyone is right in his own way. Sounds like you are
doing an excellent job with yours.
It is indeed nice to
have hard copies when showing them off to other non-genealogy members of the
family. Many of my family members, quite frankly, don't care, at this
point, but I wonder if in the future they may wish they had taken an
interest.

That's good. I was worried it might be 98SE.
My concern, although I don't often save images, but am starting to as of
the past two days, is...I want to be able to save a "portion" of the
whole (in addition to the whole), so I can READ it. The entire image
often does not have handwriting large enough for me to read.
Example: two halves of a census page at say, 75% or 50%.
I tend to print and put the censuses in acid-free sheet protectors and
bind them in a loose-leaf binder by individual.
Please keep me posted.

Hi
Open windows explorer go to
c:\Program Files\MFinstall\MFsetup.exe
You can also goto IE Tools>Manage addons and choose "Addons that have
been usd by Internet Exploer" and there should be 3 items that have
been installed by MYFamily.com Inc. and you can choose them and
disable them.
Also if you want to see if it has been installed you can use Windows
explorer and go to
c:\windows\system 32\ and see if the file MFImgVwr.ocx is there.
Hope this helps

Certain settings or conditions on a computer may prevent the Ancestry
Image Viewer from properly being downloaded and/or installed. Here are
a few reasons why this may not install successfully.
You may have declined the installation.
When the Internet Explorer Security Window appears, you must select
the "Yes" or "Install" button. The Ancestry Image Viewer will not
collect information from your browser and will be used only to view
images on Ancestry.com. Click here to return to the installation page.
You may be using a web browser other than Internet Explorer.
The Ancestry Image Viewer will work only with Internet Explorer
version 5.5 or above.
You may be using an incompatible operating system.
The Ancestry Image Viewer will work only with Windows 98, 2000, ME,
NT, and XP.
Internet Explorer's security settings may be set to disallow the
download of ActiveX controls.
If you get an error such as "Your current security settings prohibit
running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result the page may not
display correctly," you will need to modify the security settings on
Internet Explorer. To download and use the Ancestry Image Viewer,
Internet Explorer must be run under the "Medium" security setting or
be set to explicitly allow ActiveX controls to download and run.
To modify your security settings, go to the Tools menu at the top of
Internet Explorer and select Internet Options. In the window that will
appear, choose the Security tab located at the top. Select the
Internet icon at the top and click on the Default Level button. A
slider bar should appear, which you will want to move to Medium.
Select the OK button to complete the changes.
If you prefer to explicitly allow ActiveX controls without modifying
your default security level, select the Custom Level button from the
Security tab. Another window will appear. Scroll down to "Download
Signed ActiveX" and choose Prompt. Scroll down further to set "Run
ActiveX Controls and Plug-Ins" and "Script ActiveX Controls Marked
Safe for Scripting" to Enable.
You may be using Norton firewall or another type of personal firewall.
Ancestry Image Viewer installation should not be affected by network
firewalls but may be impeded by personal firewall software. If you
suspect that a personal firewall on your computer is blocking the
Ancestry Image Viewer installation, temporarily disable the virus
protection and attempt to install the viewer again. Once installation
is complete, you may immediately re-enable the personal firewall, and
the Ancestry Image viewer will still work correctly. Click here to
return to the installation page.
Your anti-virus software may be blocking the installation.
If you suspect that anti-virus software on your computer is blocking
the Ancestry Image Viewer installation, temporarily disable the virus
protection and attempt to install the viewer again. Once installation
is complete, you may immediately re-enable the anti-virus software,
and the Ancestry Image Viewer will still work correctly. Click here to
return to the installation page.
Your computer rights may not allow you to install the Ancestry Image
Viewer.
In order to install the Ancestry Image Viewer, you must be an
administrator on your local computer or have the explicit rights to
install software. Please log in to this computer with an administrator
account. If you do not have an administrator account, please contact
your network administrator for application installation instructions.

return to the installation page and select "Continue without
downloading the Ancestry Image Viewer."

Hi,
I do not have "Manage addons" and choose "Addons that have

I found MFImgVwr.ocx but it was not in System 32, rather it was in
C:\Windows\System. Another MFImgVwr.ocx is in C:\Programs\MFInstall. The
ocx extension does not seem to be recognized ... it has no icon with it.
Does that mean anything? I ran the .exe file without my anti-virus working

Click here to
return to the installation page.
Click here to
return to the installation page.
If none of the above reasons apply to your situation, please click the
Email Ancestry Support tab at the top of this page, or click here to
return to the installation page and select "Continue without
downloading the Ancestry Image Viewer."

Re: new ancestry viewer problem [screenshot]
Wait a minute. I'm getting lost. I did check to see that all those radio
buttons were set up right. But if I don't have active X installed how/where
would I find that? Wouldn't that have effected my other programs after
using this computer for 5 years? I never had such a problem before. Do you
have that link you can post for the fix Ancestry is supposedly offering? I
still have not gotten an email from them and must leave the house soon.
Thanks,

I use Netscape only, and when I went to Ancestry to try to help with the
first problem Nutty had (finding the proper page of a census), what
shows on my screen sounds like the viewer that everyone else is talking
about. However, from what i understand, the viewer is ONLY available
for a particular IE version, so what I'm seeing (and maybe what you're
seeing) is probably a look-alike to that viewer and not the exact one
that is giving Nutty such a problem.

Keywords: Ancestry.com new viewer save image fails WIN98SE
Nutty, I have precisely the same problem. The Javascript behind the
SAVE button does not work on my WIN98SE system. PRINT and SHARE
buttons bring up their windows ok and both those functions work. I
know other users can save images so I am confident that Ancestry did
not intend to block the feature.
I have tried turning off all IE6 security controls, firewall, virus
checker and installed the latest MS updates. I have switched to
another pc (on the same wireless network) and that fails in the same
way.
I guess there is some configuration detail to adjust, or a conflict to
resolve. I hope our technical friends at Ancestry will accept that a

work on our research.

Click here to
return to the installation page.
Click here to
return to the installation page.
If none of the above reasons apply to your situation, please click the
Email Ancestry Support tab at the top of this page, or click here to
return to the installation page and select "Continue without
downloading the Ancestry Image Viewer."
Thanks, I have been holding off downloading SP2. Some time ago, when I
used Netscape 7.1 as my default browser, something happened and I
thought I had lost all my email messages and some are valuable.
I have upgraded to Netscape 7.2 (default browser) and things work fine.
I use IE 6.0 for Ancestry.
By the way, I deleted the MF folder with the 6 files. I can restore it
from the recycle bin if needed. Interestingly, I re-visited the
Ancestry censuses both with IE and with Netscape browsers. The new
viewer automatically loaded! It gave me a choice, but quickly loaded again!

Hi
You could backup your email files before you run the upgrade and
restore after you finish upgrade. if you are using outlook express
search for files *.dbx when you find them copy them to a new folder
then copy them back to where they were after the upgrade.

Although I have Outlook on the computer, I don't use it. I used to
think it was quite a target for viruses, guess it still can be
considered one.
Many of my emails are from Ancestry.com. I don't have time to read all,
so I save them. They are large. Others are personal messages that I
don't necessarily want to print out.
I have never quite understood how to save and restore them properly.
Could I do the following?:
1) Copy the folders that contain the emails to a 250MB ZIP or burn them
to a CD. Then put them back to their original place if SP2 affected
them in some way?
2) I could also do: Alt+Print screen to save a "snapshot" of the
entire layout of the folders and paste it to a MS Word document and save
that as well on the ZIP Disk or CD.
Thanks,

I want to try to reinstall the viewer. I can't find where to do so. Your
copy and paste had lots of good suggestions but I can't find where you found
this. Please tell me where you can find the program to reinstall.
Ancestry.com sent me an email saying that they working on an uninstall
program. Once they roll this out you should be able to uninstall and reinstall
to your heart's content.

THIS SHOULD NEVER BE DONE EXCEPT AS A VERY LAST OPTION.
You should first attempt other options for troubleshooting issues that may arise with this viewer (delete cookies, set automatic prompting to Disable, delete the MF Install object, etc.).
IF (AND ONLY IF) YOU FIND THE VIEWER MUST BE UNINSTALLED, here is what you do.
1. Get into the Registry Editor.
2. Under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\ find and delete the {afdd01b0-7abb-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66} key.
3. In C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files\ find and delete the MFInstall Class folder; this may be called afdd01b0-7abb-11d9-9669-0800200c9a66 instead.
4. In C:\Program Files\ delete the MFInstall folder.
5. In C:\WINDOWS\system32\ find and delete the mfimgvwr.ocx file.
ONCE AGAIN: PLEASE ONLY UNINSTALL THIS AS A LAST RESORT.
These instructions may be specific to WinXP. I have not tried it as the viewer
seems to work OK on my PC.
Good luck!

That is an extremely dangerous set of instructions to be unleashing on the public at large. Someone who isn't familiar with the process of editing the Registry could totally disable their
machine. I note that it doesn't even have a reminder to backup the Registry before starting.
The responsible action on the part of Ancestry.com would be to create a downloadable executable that would accomplish that function for the various Windows releases including XP, 98, ME, 2000,
etc. They created the problem. It's up to them to fix it.

OK ... this is getting to me big time. First of all I thank you all for
baring with me on this one ... Here's the exact thing that is happening
for
me.
I have image on screen. I go up to "file", "save as" but when trying to
do
it that way it says "the web page could not be saved to the selected
location".
There is now a "save" icon above the image to the right ... third icon
in
.... after "Help" and "Share". I click on that. A window comes up with
"save options". You have a choice to click on a radio button to "save
image
to" either the computer or my ancestry. I click on my computer option.
Click "OK". Nothing happens. Nothing at all. No window allows me to
chose
to where I can save it or to name the file. Nada! Nothing!
I want to get back to my old viewer but cannot do so. I have no "go
back"
program on this computer that is running on Windows 98SE. I can't get
in
touch with Ancestry. Have tried the help files. No help on this issue.
I
would advise everyone not to download this new program or beware! You
may
lose the whole option of saving any census images again. Maybe you will
be
able to if I am seeing others can but I cannot. How I wish I could
start
this day over again.
Thanks,
Nutty ... and getting worse!
I tried saving to ANCESTRY and it brought up that page where I have
saved things a while ago. The subject line was blank (because I was not
given any option to name it with the person's name in the census).
I tried to save the image to DESKTOP, it seemed to do so, but it is not
on my desktop.

But as long as some of us don't have that problem, it's not likely a
glitch on
Ancestry's end. It's more likely just a matter of finding the right
setting to
adjust on your computer.
