HELP - Can't find Barber in Virginia c.1820

Legg inn av sosider@msn.com » 08 mar 2005 02:19:33

I've reached a dead end. Nicholas Barber married Phoebe Woolf in 1826
and we know he died after three kids were born. Census records of 1830
and later say that he was born in England but we can't find how to find
him in England or and records prior to 1826 in Virginia. Now we have
found a Nicholas Barber married in the Congressional Cemetary in
Washington DC but can't prove that this is our Nicholas Barber. The
Washington DC grave is in the plot purchased by a George Barber and it
includes Georges wife, sister and children. Phoebe who died after the
Civil War is burried in a plot not far away in the same cemetary but
with her daughter and son-in-law. Some family traditions say that
Nicholas came to the US with his wife and child, but that his then wife
died on the ship during childbirth. We have no record of that and to
have married Phoebe in Virginia would have meant that he would have to
have been willingly separated from his infant children since there is
no inclusion of these children in the Virginia census record of them
living with Nicholas and PHoebe. ANY SUGGESTIONS ON WHERE TO GO NEXT?

Try Barbour -- it's a common variant in Virginia.

I had the same problem in Colorado Springs -- all sorts of stylists but
nary a barber.

Phoebe Wolfe.
George Barber, born 3/22/1820, died 1/14/1878, married to Jane Lucinda

Thank you very much for your reply. The information in the first link
about Bayliss Barber is well known to me since Bayliss is buried in the
cemetary on my farm in Sangamon County Illinois and his sons are board
members of the cemetary. I'm new to the use of the internet for
genealogical reaearch so this "rootsweb" post is new to me. I
couldn't quite catch your interest in the Oregon verification, but I
have pictures of the headstones in George's plot in the Congressional
Cemetary and I think more information gleaned from a visit to the
office of the cemetary (not particularly well funded or equipped) as
well as a copy of George's will. If you are somehow tied to this
family (either George or Nicholas) let me know and I can give you more
information on both. Interestingly enough I have found a Nicholas
Barbourn (handwritten entries) in the 1820 census of Virginia in the
country (Loudoun) directly to the north of Fauquier County where my
Nicholas was married and lived. I have also found George in the census
records of DC.
If I can help you, why don't you email me directly at sosider@msn.com.
My interests involve verifing any relationship between George and
Nicholas and if there is any, finding their link to England.

Thanks for your offer - I simply like to browse through posts and then try
to find information for people (especially those who are at a roadblock).
I'm not related in any way to your family, but I appreciate your willingness
to share information.
Good luck with your research.
