Re: Help reading census
It looks like, Gr-Van, but that doesn't make much sense for a first name.
This may just be something you have to live with.

that we can all see it with out subcribing to Ancestry.

I'll start doing that. It hadn't occurred to me since I know many people
have access to Ancestry.
Thanks, Ephraim

Hi Bob
Did not want to write to the Group but this is Graham. Look at the
previous line and see how the letters flow down and through the next (line
71) and it would now appear to read Graham.
Cheers
Ewan
PS I like many others do not subscribe to Ancestry.

In 1910, I tried residence MO, and all first names beginning with G,
Joseph F and David W, keeping in mind where they were born but can't
find the rest.
Do you know where Gr-Van? was in 1910 at age 24 +/- year?
Also, McIntyre variations could be tried. I separated the surname, to
be: Mc Intyre but that didn't seem to give any results. Might try:
McIntyer or McIntire. I tried a few, but it would take quite a while.
Good luck in your search.

You might try censeses in the state of Virginia, perhaps these folks
moved back to where they were born, except G...who was born in Kansas.
I have exhausted my resources.

Just off the top of my head, at first glance, I would say that the name is
Gr, an abbreviation for George or Gregory perhaps?, and the middle name is
Van B. most likely for Van Buren. During this time period, a lot of people
named their children after presidents and other famous politicians,
inventors, etc. I have a Benjamin Franklin Hunter in my family.
I hope that helps. Good luck with your search. Try doing a search for
George or Greg (maybe even Grant?) Van Buren McIntyre (use soundex) with
birthdate approximately 1885 and check all states.
Happy Hunting!

Re: Help reading census
Alida, you are a genius! I had seen some other unconventional name
abbreviation that that census-taker had used, and also thought the first
letters might stand for be George.
**But I hadn't even thought of the Buren to go with the Van.** Way to
go!!!!!!

Re: Help reading census
While it does look like Gr Van, there was a name it could be,
"Grovan" this is a real first name, not popular but real.

Re: Help reading census
Another possibility (although I tend to agree with the "George" and the use
of Gr as abbreviation) is Gervass (a/k/a Gervase).
