Spelling help, please

Legg inn av singhals » 05 mar 2005 17:38:42

I'm looking for a family surnamed PERVAIL (or at least, that's how one
of the descendants spelled it when he sent it).

No joy.

I tried PERVALE, no joy; and PERVILL, PERVILLE, no joy.

The Surname thesarus gives me a blank look.

Locale: somewhere in the US
Time: 1850 to 1900

Other than reversing the ER to RE -- can anyone think of another way to
spell it?

Thanks!

Cheryl

You know, I swear sometimes I get different results on different days
....! Thanks, I'll certainly look at all of 'em!

I hadn't seen any of those before; I recognize one of the names but I
*think* he's too young to be daddy (-m- 1846) and MUCH too old to be son

Only one showed up in two census, and those were not contiguous! That
list is ALL on-line census records with that exact spelling. Clearly
some of the interim census records must have used "alternative" spellings.

Census records require some interpretation: note the spelling change in
first name and in "20 years" he only 'aged' 13 years suggesting it's a
namesake and not the same person! - RM

Thanks again Rick! I managed to track 'em to 1920!

Wow; now with at least one birthdate in each generation, maybe I can
turn up more! (g)

I have had some luck searching the census on Ancestry.com by looking for
a FIRST name, age, and birth state. It's filled in some census gaps
created by poor penmanship and overwhelmed transcription. First names
are a little less likely to be mis-spelled, but you need the supporting
information to weed out the "false positives".

Knowing the family had been in the region for decades on either side made
this kind of search possible in this case. The family unit and
occupation also nailed it down. In hindsight, I could also have searched
the neighbors from bracketing censuses.

With a name like that I'd suggest also look for surnames such as PURVAIL,
PURVAILE and PURVALE, as phonetically these would sound the same as PERVAIL.

Yes, I've used that successfully in other cases, but in this particular
instance, I had NO idea which part of the US to look in.

The bottom line is that you have to search for all reasonable spellings
in all areas as the "spelling" of the name changed with the times and
with the census takers and with the family preferences - and of course
people moved...

Cheryl,

If it is a Polish or German name the "V" should be replaced with "W" for the
same sound.
