Help with English born grandmother

Legg inn av EM Scheeler » 01 mar 2005 06:05:43

I am trying to find my great grandparents. On the census my
grandmother-Elizabeth Moore-lists her birthplace as Cannada En and my great
grandfater as being born in Jorland or Gorland. Does anyone know where this
is? Would appreciate any help I can get

According to this site

it's on an island off the northwest coast of Norway.

Jim is right on with Google.

Ellen, I believe that your grandmother meant she was born in Canada, and
that she was English by nationality.

What is the surname of your great grandfather?

Joe in Georgetown, Texas, USA
Return address is bogus.

Canada English usually meant not Lower Canada or Quebec, but Upper Canada,
Ontario usually (in later census) or sometimes the maritimes.
You will see Canada French and Canada English
99% of the time meaning Quebec or Ontario

Jorland is an island somewhere around Norway, I think.

Thanks to the Simmons Family for the correction and information. I had
wondered about that in the past, searching census lists.

I'll wager your gmother was born in Canada-English (as
opposed to Canada-French) and your ggrandp in Ireland.

For help with Canadian genealogy, see
http://olivetreegenealogy.com/can/

Since it's Canada English, you can safely say she wasn't
born in Quebec. You haven't given us any years so I can't
help guide you further in your search in Canadian records.
