How ro record branches...
Hi
I use Family Tree Maker to record my findings.
I've been wondering what's the best way to record the various family 'lines'.
Is it better / clearer to use a separate tree for my fathers line and my
mothers?
If I put them all in one file, will it become too complex to follow?
What do other people do?
Amy thoughts would be appreciated,

representation that is available, it is very easy to navigate to the person
of interest.
When a relative wishes a copy of their portion of the tree, I slice my tree
up and using Second Site create a CD for them that contains html of their
family with full tree and indices all hyperlinked.

I use TMG and include all the ancestors of our son. Using the tree
representation that is available, it is very easy to navigate to the person
of interest.

ancestors of my children, and all descendants of those ancestors.
If a cousin asks for info, I then simply select them and export all their
relatives, including, of course, spouses and parents of spouses.

TMG is The Master Genealogist. An excellent program, and very versatile.

Steve,
I like that idea.
within FTM is there an easy way to seperate my direct lines from the
"possible lines", or would I have to move each person?
Thanks

I've not used FTM, but I never move anything out of may main file, nor do I
delete any records. If I enter something that really doesn't belong I just
change the surname to Zzblank, and reuse it when I'm entering new people.
That's because my Mainfile is in a number of different genealogy programs,
which all use different reports and have different features I find useful. The
RINs are the same in each version, so I've indexed the anmes on that.
But, to give an example -- someone sent me a bunch of GREENAWAY information
from Cornwall. His family, not mine. I imported the GEDCOM into its own file,
and exported all my Greenaway-related families from my mainfile to that file.
Any other Cornwall Greenaway information I find, I enter in there, whether
they are related or not, and look at the info to see if there are connections.
if I find any, I'll enter them into my main file. It's not a true one-name
study, but it is similar.
One thing I DON'T do is keep different files for different branches of my
family. That would make it verry difficult to do a pedigree chart for my
children. So I don't have one for my wife and another for me, or one for my
father and another for my mother. I put all information on people who are
related in one file.

Re: How ro record branches...
What my thought would to be is to have the mainfile, with everything.
Also have a direct line file, which are the verified family memebers. I
started to use the seperate files for seperate families and ran in to
the nightmare.
I have been trying to come up with a system to have those not verifieed
stand out from those that do.
I started with a + but found out how big of a pain that was in doing
surname searches.
thanks for the ideas
