The only George Kershaw in RI in the 1920 Census was living as a boarder in
Woonsocket, RI and he was age 49, born in England, single, and a machinist in a
machine shop. (The B & S mentioned in the 1919 and 1921 directories was likely
Brown & Sharpe, a large machine tool manufaturing plant in Providence) He is
listed as coming to America in 1871 and naturalized in 1906. This George seems
to be the same as one who appears in the 1930 Census, and who does appear to
match the one in the Providence directories.
The 1930 Census shows George Kershaw, 59, on 16 1/2 Lisbon, a widower, with a
daughter Ethel, 17 and a 65-year-old servant. He was a machine operator at a
machine factory and had come to America in 1892 from England.
Some obvious inconsistencies in the Census descriptions, but probably the same
person.
The 1910 Census has George Kershaw living at 85 River Ave in Providence. He was
38, born in England, and working as a machinist at a tool works. He was married
to Agnes M., age 29, born in England. They had George, age 8, and Donald, age
6-- both born in RI. They had been married for 9 years with two children, both
living.
Adding to the confusion, (another?) George and Agnes Kershaw were enumerated on
Charles St. in Pawtucket, RI (a Providence suburb) in the 1910 Census. Both
were shown as age 39, born in England, married 10 years with no children. He
was a machinist at a machine shop. He came to America in 1892 and she in 1890.
Your relatives? You figure this all out.
Hope this helps.

Re: 1920 census address lookup - Rhode Island?
Hi Bruce and Bob,
thanks for your replies.
I am getting more and more confused trying to chase down my George KERSHAW.
Facts that I have:
Sarah KERSHAW nee NICHOLS died 24 March 1898 at Whitinsville, Northbridge,
Massachusetts (death certificate)
George KERSHAW is on the 1891 UK census with his mother Sarah, he is not on
the 1901 UK census.
George KERSHAW travelled to Whitinsville, Massachusetts on 12 Aug 1898
(Campania), age 29, machinist, single having been in US previously for 5
yrs(Ellis Island)
George KERSHAW, machinist, bds 45 Main st, Whitinsville in 1898-1899
Northbridge Directory (he is NOT at this address in 1900)
Photograph of 3 KERSHAW brothers taken at Comet Studio, 70 Pleasant St, Fall
River, Massachusetts circa 1920 (a guess from ages)
What I would like to find out:
Did George KERSHAW remain in USA?
Did he marry and have children?
Are there any living descendants?
I have found the marriage of George KERSHAW to Agnes M ASHCROFT in Rhode
Island 1 Jan 1901.
What with the confusion regarding the census entries I am still stabbing in
the dark in the hope of finding more clues to try and determine if this is
my George KERSHAW or not...
your help and suggestions are very much appreciated,
Sharon
