Looking for Danish relatives in USA
Hi,
I'm looking for a Danish relative who emigrated to United States in
1903.
His full name was "Laurits Christian Alfred Larsen". He was born in
Denmark on May 3rd 1883.
I don't if he used his full name when he came to the USA, maybe he only
used Laurits Larsen, Laurits Chritstian Larsen, or maybe choose Alfred
or Christian as his first name -- as I was told Laurits is not a very
common name in the US.
I've heard that he had at least to sons who where active during WW1.
Maybe the died in service.
I am very much hoping to find any relatives connected to Laurits.
If you can help me, or guide me in a helpful direction please answer
this message.
Thank you in advance for any help.
Kind regards,
Peter F. Poulsen

A quick search at http://www.ellisisland.org doesn't give a good match and the
same for Dansk Data Arkiv emigration database.
Where in Denmark was he born and where was he living when he left ? How do
you know that he left in 1903 ? Any idea where in the USA he went ? No old
letters from him or stories about him ?
You must mean WW II, his sons would have been too young for WW I.

Re: Looking for Danish relatives in USA
the 1910 US Census in Chicago shows a Laurits Larson b. 1883, he is listed
as Norwegian, but he is a boarder with some other family, even though it
says he has been married for 5 years.
There is an immigration record in 1909 showing a Laurits Christian Larsen
entering the USA at Boston,
he was from Djirre Denmark, he was going to see a relative P. ANderson in
Massacusetts.
This one appears to be traveling with a THomas Andreas Larsen, perhaps a
brother?

Re: Looking for Danish relatives in USA
Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
I tried ellisisland too but unfortunately without any result
He was born on Lolland (an island) in Denmark. The story tells that he
left in 1903 and that he went / eventually lived in Vermont. The Danish
family did have contact with him until the war where the connection was
lost. Unfortunately everything was lost here in Denmark as well so we
don't even have any letters. All we have is his birth certificate and a
few stories of him.
You're right -- of course it must have been WW2
Kind regards,
Peter F. Poulsen

Re: Looking for Danish relatives in USA
Hi,
That's very interesting. I have his birth certificate and know he was
born i 1983.
I think the record you found on Laurits Christian Larsen is the most
interesting. There is no place called "Djirre" in Denmark, but I'll try
asking arround -- maybe someone can guess what it should have been.
I don't know of a brother travelling with him, but I will try to check
with the old ones in the family, maybe they know something I don't.
Any chance you could e-mail me the record, maybe I'll get something
else instead of "Djirre" (I take it's a handwritten record?)
Kind regards,
Peter F. Poulsen

You're welcome. Would you have the town name on Lolland or his sons names?
From Lolland I would think that he would have left Denmark through
Copenhagen, but I don't find him in the Danish Emigration database.
http://www.emiarch.dk/home.php3?l=en I also don't find any Larsen with a
03 May 1883 birth date in the Social Security Death Index.
You could request lookups from people who have access to the USA census for
Vermont for 1910, 1920 and 1930 for a Larsen born in Denmark in 1883.
The two problems you have are that Larsen is a common family name and you
are not sure what first name he used in the USA.

Unfortunately I don't have the town name at hand. But I will try
talking to some of the older members of the family, maybe they know
something.
I will try requesting lookups. Is this the correct group for that?

Re: Looking for Danish relatives in USA
Peter, I have sent you a copy of the 1910 census for a Larsen, b. Denmark
1883. He is listed as a private in the US Army stationed at Fort Ethan Allen

Peter, that sounds like your Mr. Larsen. With the first name he used in the
1910 census and all other relevant information you can request census
lookups in 1920 and 1930. One or more of the census records would show his
wife and children's names. This is the group to ask for census lookups.
If he stayed in the Army he could be in any state in 1920 and 1930. If he
left the army he may have remained in Vermont.
