Got an email regarding this problem from the 'Dear Myrtle' list,
forwarded to one I was on, where apparently AOL is blocking access to
Rootsweb lists and other mailing lists, not just the genealogy ones.

Dear Myrtle has it ALL wrong. She read "newsgroups" and automatically
assumed "mailing lists". AOL is shutting newsgroups access. Except for
the RootsWeb mailing lists (fewer than 30 of them) which mirror these
newsgroups there is no relationship at all. Those mailing lists will see
no changes.

Myrt has been corrected by many people. I assume she will post an apology
for her wild attempts to get people to leave AOL.

And you don't even have to use a newsreader to read and post to the
newsgroup directly.

Google Groups now posts messages to the groups and gatewayed mailing
lists almost immediately, and you can read them in Google Groups and
search them as well. It's just like the old Deja News, Finally!

You can post to any and all newsgroups, not just genealogy groups, via
Google Groups. Google Groups is also searchable, and for the most
part, spam-free as well, a few sneak by, but almost all of it is gone
now.

You can read Google Groups from AOL. No need to even leave AOL to read
newsgroups now.

If you are reading the mailing list version of alt.genealogy for
example, you can go to the Google Groups version via this link.

http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.genealogy

To read any other Usenet group, simply type its name in the place of
'alt.genealogy'.

I expect the 'groups-beta' part to change in the future, once they get
past the beta stage of it.

Yesterday when I sent out my mailer AOL did block numerous AOL email
addresses. I thought that they were just having another problem with
their system. - Vickie

My ISP has blocked mail to AOL addresses in the past.

If you mean you're sending out a newsletter when you say mailer, then
you might be falling foul of an ISP's over zealous anti spam filter.
I've had to get my ISP to specifically allow 3 newletters I'm subbed
to which had been caught in their anti spam filter.

Yes I specifically meant mailing list. It was the first time I had ever
had it happened. I have heard of this happening with other people
before. That is why I just thought it was a system glitch. If it
happens with my next mailing I will find out what the problem is.

I think it could be a problem that people are going to encounter more
often, unfortunately :(( Spam is such a problem now that the ISPs are
finally getting their acts together with the consequence that innocent
people, like yourself, who are sending out family newsletters are
being caught as well because the filters can't tell the difference
between what is genuine spam and what is not.

I don't think there's going to be an easy answer :((
