Got an email regarding this problem from the 'Dear Myrtle' list,
forwarded to one I was on, where apparently AOL is blocking access to
Rootsweb lists and other mailing lists, not just the genealogy ones.
I emailed AOL last night, and got this response this morning. It's
more generic than I'd hoped, but this will do for now.

The only trouble I have is when the RootsWeb servers go down. I know it's
at their end as I receive my lists on two separate addresses, one AOL, one
not.

Re: AOL blocking of Rootsweb lists, other genealogy mailing
If you have problems reading the mailing list for any reason,
regardless of where, you can read the lists at Google Groups. You can
post to any Usenet group that way as well, and the messages will show
almost immediately, usually no later than ten minutes after you post.
You can even access Google Groups from within AOL. They own the old
'deja.com' domain, and use that as a redirector to Google Groups.
Here's the link directly to alt.genealogy, for example.
http://groups-beta.google.com/group/alt.genealogy
To read any other Usenet newsgroup, replace 'alt.genealogy' with that
group's name.
Google will eventually change the 'groups-beta' part to something else
once the beta phase is complete.
