[META] Google and Usenet

Some people have pointed out that the Google newsgroups interface is less than
clear about how one should reply to or follow-up articles in newsgroups (in
Usenet terminology "Reply" means to reply by e-mail to the original poster; a
response posted to the group is called a "Follow-up").

As one person put it (in rec.arts.books, 2005-02-02):

New users are pouring into the Google system, with virtually no training. With
the default Reply at the bottom of the post set to NOT quote the message, most
new users don't explore to figure out how to find the alternate method...
this has led to an increasing number of posts that violate basic netiquette.

For those posting from Google, therefore, the following advice should be
helpful.

To post with quoting to a newsgroup using Google, click on the "show options"
link at the top right of the post to which you wish to respond. Then click on
"reply" at the left end of the options menu. If you don't have a Google
account name and password, you'll have to set one up before proceeding.

The original post with each line preceded by "> " should appear in a large
text box which you can edit, just as in earlier editions.
