Early Norwegian Settlers in America online

Legg inn av Margit Bakke » 31 jan 2005 20:38:16

Hi all,
If anyone has Norwegian ancestry, check these pages out, lots of names.
Washington state was just finished and Montana state. Massachusetts next. It
is being translated from the old Gothic Script Norwegian by Olaf Kringhaug
of Vernon, BC Canada who was born in Norway.
Enjoy and hopefully someone will connect with family.

Hi, Margit.

Is this related to the Vesterheim's project along similar lines? Are you
aware of that project? There is an immense amount of information there,
perhaps a sharing of information would be beneficial to both parties.

I've visited the website in the past and did again today when yor post in the
other ng reminded me of it. I quickly found myself looking at the Beltrami
County, Minnesota portion and read the following: "The first settlers in
Beltrami County were also tormented by the Indians. They were often on the
warpath and scared the settlers from their homes. The Indian chieftain, Bemidji,
who was an honorable man, went around and warned the whites and instructed then
in hunting and tracking. There are many who owe him a debt of gratitude, not
only for his guidance and guard service, but also for his hospitality they
received in his home".

Among the pictures I've been scanning recently are a couple of photos of one of
those Indians and his dwellings. I don't know if it's the chief or not. Included
are my ancestor, Olof, and members of his family. He homesteaded up there and
I'd estimate that they are circa 1905. Let me know if there's any interest.
