Family DNA and mtDNA

Legg inn av Ray Wesley Kinserlow Jr. » 28 jan 2005 09:53:57

I had my Y Chromosome done by Family DNA thanks to my mother and
sister, both genealogists. The results and family and friend anecdote
indicate my biological grandfather is different than the late husband
of my late father's mother. This does not bother me much as I did not
like my grandmother's husband anyway. My sister is worried that the
man we have decided is my father's father, Chester Wilson, is being
besmirched by evidence from a possibly questionable outfit. Has
anyone had any bad experiences with Family DNA? Do they have a good
reputation?
My curiosity stirred by my Y Chromosome results, I had a mtDNA test
run on my DNA. Family Tree DNA can shed no light on the results other
than to tell me I am in the Ub5 haplogroup. What the hell does this
mean? My sister tells me you have to be a scientist to understand
mtDNA. I am hoping for a slightly less intricate explanation of it.
Would it be helpful to have my mother and sister have their mtDNA
done?

Here's a website which _may_ help you.

http://www.hollandfamily.us/DNA/news012004.htm

A couple of weeks ago I saw a presentation by a DNA testing company at a
genealogy society meeting, so I at least recognize "haplogroup,"
"haplotype," etc. :-)

It appears that they are saying your MtDNA is common over a certain
area, but they can't pinpoint it any closer than that. According to this
web site, the U haplogroup is found in Northern Europe.

And your mother's and your sister's MtDNA should be the same as yours.
